Some people say theyve had great success with doorknocking, maybe that was in the past or in a rural area.  I dont know if doorknocking works for everyone in a big city.

Anyway, do any of you guys cold call instead?  If so, where do you get your lists from and what script do you use?  We didnt discuss this at KYC

You didn’t discuss it in KYC because Jones doesn’t believe you should start a relationship over the phone.  They believe you should differentiate yourself from your competition by doorknocking instead of cold calling.

If you want to buy a list there are testimonials on Jonesnet, which will from here forward be called Joogle, about some of the vendors out there.  There have been quite a few people who have given their basic scripts for cold calling on here.  You should have plenty of info to make a well informed decision on whether you want to cold call or not.

MJ - Door knocking sucks, but don't try to avoid it. It does work. It even works in the suburbs of big cities. It may not be as effective in those areas, but you can start relationships that way. Why would you take a job at EJ and then a few weeks in give up on the door knocking part? You knew when you took the job what was expected.

I know Jones guys that have done it but its an addition not the core and only after they at least had an office. Try and enjoy talking to people while you are out there, make it conversational, after all you can’t sell yet so do what Windy does and ask them to go fishing with you then turn them into a client.

BTW I know doorknocking sucks, just had a guy this morning call the sherrif and demand I leave. I didn’t, the Sherrif showed as I was further down the road and all that was necessary was a simple explanation of what I was doing. I could have either had that kill my day or as I did I laughed it off. The guy who called followed me around till the cop showed up and was pretty pissed when the cop allowed me to continue.

[/quote]   i was thrilled about the opportunity to work here, so i convinced myself that doorknocking wouldnt be that bad...but that feeling has worn off and I really hate it.  Its actually making me depressed and i hate waking up in the morning.  when i wake up im actually pissed off, ive never felt this way before.   maybe i can do a mix of both.   even the boa at an office i went to told me (quote) "i HATE (and she put emphasis on the word "hate") sales people, i would never open my door. thats why im a boa"  shes been working for the company for years and she still feels this way   after doing this for a few weeks, i feel like im being invasive and annoying when i knock on doors.  people dont want to be bothered by a stranger after a long day of work and sitting in traffic.  people look at me with disgust and i cant even blame them.  one dude pissed me off so bad yesterday, he cursed at me for no reason.  i was so mad i could barely force myself to say "sorry for bothering you" before i hurried to my car and sped home.  i dont have enough control of my temper to deal with people cursing at me every day. yesterday was really my wakeup call.  i wanted to say something to the guy, but i realized i was in his yard uninvited.  i hate being put in that position. i was so fukking mad    and people are home and they wont answer their door for me, but why would they?  i talked to my mom and my aunts about this, and they said if they saw me knocking at their door they wouldnt answer either.  i'm 6'2/210....i wouldnt advise any women/small men to answer the door if i knocked either. im 23 years old and im knocking on the doors of 30/40/50/60 year old men and women.  if they open the door and i bumrush them theyre helpless unless theyre armed.  of course i would never do this, im a very nice person, but how are they supposed to know that when we have so many lunatics running around? they probably think the risk of opening the door isnt worth whatever i have to offer....or they just dont want to be bothered     im about to try again @ 3

By the sounds of it, this might not be the business for you, and that’s being polite. I’ve had the cops called on me, been bitten by two dogs, and been cursed off more than one porch. It’s been over 5 years since I doorknocked but I think back on it now, and the driving factor was that I wanted to be in this business and just listened to people older and wiser than I was at the time say that things wouldn’t get any easier and you have to make a decision. Once you get to Eval/Grad, you’ll start phoning some of your prospects and they will hang up on you, curse you, tell you never to phone again. You’ll phone them for years hoping they will buy that $5k bond from you.

I wouldn't buy something from someone going door to door either, but there are lots of people who do, including investments. I sure am a lot more polite to the JW's and Mormon's that knock on my door now however

Two choices mj - realize that you're not the first successful advisor with Jones to despise doorknocking, suck it up, and keep pounding the pavement.  BTW, you are projecting your thoughts and feelings on the prospects.  You're shutting yourself down before you ever ring the doorbell.  I'm 6'2 210...no, 220lbs so I step back from the door about 8-10 feet after I ring the doorbell.  I also make sure I'm a step down from them at all times.  It's a game you've got to play.  Right now, you're losing.  Stop losing, keep doorknocking, start winning.  Cold calling isn't any easier.  It sucks too.      Second - go get another job.  Make a decision that this profession isn't for you and move on.  No harm, no foul.  Leave the industry and Jones won't go after you for training costs.

Couple of tips: Step back from the door. Way back. I am in a big city, right in the heart of it. The houses are all very old with large porches. I step off the porch and back onto the steps as soon as I knock. I am a female, so it’s gonna be different, but I will say this, attitude is everything with doorknocking. You should be smiling walking down the street, smiling as you approach the door, smiling at all times. People will notice you before you get to the doorstep.

I really find it fun to be a sickly sweet to the rude ones as possible. Never forget, you may have just caught them on a really bad day. I know there are days when if you come knocking on my door, I am going to be a bitch.   If you start out with a negative attitude about it, then that will translate to consistently crappy days. Yes, there are people out there like your BOA, your mom and your aunts, but there are also plenty of women and men that will not have a problem opening the door for you. Don't get caught up in the negative thinking that everyone is going to be like them, because they won't be.   Good luck out there, and keep your chin up.

MJ … just quit.  You are not going to make it.  You either buy into it or not and we know where you stand.  So start getting that resume ready and just let Jone’s fire ya… BECAUSE I’M ALREADY TIRED OF READING YOUR CRAP.

Ask still@jones how it’s done, he’ll give you the 411.

Don't get discouraged.  I've been with Jones nearly 8 years.  I will never be a star, but that's OK.  I run a profitable and ethical business.  I am an lp and mentor.  I use chotskies to make a point when I introduce myself or teach a class.  For example, I bought small super balls at oriental trading (ten cents each) which I hand to prospects/ students along with my card.  "We believe in investing in quality companies, because quality companies tend to bounce back" (Drop ball and catch before handing to prospect/ student)   I only discovered this site a week ago, so if I am making etiquette mistakes, my apologies

Mj,

I am 6'5 230, and have had very little problems having people open their doors when I knock.  Even little old ladies that I could clobber with ease come and answer the door all the time. Granted you may be in an area where people are less receptive to someone coming to their door, but it's got nothing to do with your size/weight/aftershave lotion. It's all about attitude, so pick up your skirt, grab your balls, and go make some money.
