Was hoping to get some feedback on New FAs joining civic organizations.  I’ve been asked to join a local rotary and lions club.  Has anyone seen any value in doing this stuff?  Do you prospect while you’re there or just hang your shingle and expect them to chat you up.  No idea what the professional decorum is.

I joined Kiwanis very early in my career and decided if I did I was going to be extremely active.  I am on and chair several committees, will be a Board of Director etc.  I have gotten some pretty large clients as a result.  I don't actively prospect during our Lunch, however, they seem to come to me...I believe this is a direct result of my being active.  We have another broker in the group and he gets virtually nothing from the club.  I happen to know that Rotary is very serious about no "prospecting", Kiwanis however, is ok with it as long as you are not there for that reason only.
