In the second installment of this new podcast series, Michael Kitces, financial planner and author of the Nerd’s Eye View blog, and Joe Duran, CEO of United Capital Financial Advisers, have a candid conversation about how advisors can be successful business leaders.

When an advisor becomes the owner of an advisory business, that person’s job becomes less about working with clients and more about leading a business. That requires a completely different skill set, Duran says.

In this episode, Duran and Kitces walk listeners through what those skills are and how advisors can be better business leaders at their firms.

A major problem, Duran says, is that owners spend too much time focused on the practice, not on shaping themselves as leaders.

“They spend almost no time working on themselves, and they are usually the major constraint toward future growth,” he says.
