I will be starting completely from scratch. What would be a good company to get started with? I have no portfolio, but I currently sell mortgages and do pretty well with that, so I do have sales experience. Im in los angeles.. what would be a good company to go with? Any advice is appreciated.

You should consider engaging in a process that is very similar to how clients should choose an advisor. Find out how companies get paid, what are the mutual expectations, benefits and weaknesses. In other words, do some basic research, come back here with some sharp questions this will elicit useful information that can be broadly shared.

Ameriprise Financial is a great company to work for. The financial plan is the cornerstone for all of their efforts.  They offer great support and will work with you.

Ameriprise blows, ignore that guys post.

If your starting from scratch, it may be a good idea to pair up with an established advisor and do something like a split rep code on commissions. Or start as someone’s sales assistant and grow to a junior broker from that.

Wachovia Securities will soon have alot of empty office space available and you can continue the loans …However Reggin is onto something…Mc Donalds’s might pay better and your customers will be treated fairly! I would would go with McDonalds over Wachovia Securities…

Honestly the best option is to find and older guy who drinks alot, smokes hourly, and goes to McDonalds at least twice a day and team up...Make sure he doesn't have any doppy kids in the business first..A poor memory would be a plus!

Just having some fun with the Mc D's. Seriously, find a mentor and shut up and listen for couple of years. I don't care if its ML or even a bank.  You will be light years ahead of you peers.  Listen to Stefany she is right on. Remember to listen twice as much as you talk and put you clients interest first.

Ameriprise does blow go to a reputable firm and get beat up for two years.

RWM, that really is great advice - observe. Especially if you find the right person to team up with, you would be amazed how much you can learn and the opportunities that will be presented to you. That is how I got started. I was a salaried employee for a large producer and now I have my own Division and a small group of reps to supervise. I would not be where I am today without the help of the gentlemen that I apprenticed with. Yesimsteve, I wish you a great amount of luck and prosperity, but unfortunately, with the way things are going in the U.S. right now, you are going to have to play your cards smart. Now is not necessarily the time to start taking huge risks, unless you don’t have to worry about paying a mortgage, car payment, insurance, etc. If you have nothing to tie you down, then right now maybe the opportunity of a life time for you to succeed in the financial industry.

I cannot stress this enough.  Unfortunately my experience didn't go as planned.  Not fun!
