You’ve never actually been here have you Volt and if you have it sounds like you’ve only been in the 2 metropolitan areas in the whole state. This state is nothing but small towns. BBQ, Nascar, Football, Mullets, Oil rigs in backyards, Country Legends, World Rodeo Championships, Tornado’s and Trailer Parks all reign in my state. Let’s not forget the Meth labs in trailer homes in the mountains of SE Oklahoma and the Tulsa race riots. Did you know one of the largest groups of the KKK is here, and being fought by the police everyday? We may not have the black population (although OKC’s and Tulsa is around 20%) I’d say this is pretty damn close to the south.

I used to go to Enid twice a month (I did fly into OKC or drive up from Amarillo), been to your fine state plenty of times.  It's rural but not the south.  OK is tough to fit into a regional box.  You are somewhere between mid-west and south-west but certainly not the traditional south.

I was born in OK - Tulsa.  Spent almost every summer from age 6 to 17 there.  I go to Norman every year in April for a week.

I live in the South.  Oklahoma is not the South.

Enid is not the south. Enid is farmers ranchers, cattle and wheat. I’m guessing you have never been to Broken Bow, Oklahoma…SE Oklahoma is another world.

No, southwest Georgia, south Alabama and Mississippi are whole other worlds. Seriously, we lived there (right around the GA/AL border) for a year. Still segregated in the mid 90’s. Probably still are. They had trailers behind the school for the black kids. No joke. (My mom actually got a call from my teacher on my second day of school. It went something like this… MsBroker has an issue with saying yes, ma’am, and no, ma’am. If she doesn’t correct this, we’re gonna have to put her in the lower class with the black children.)

You walk into a convenience store, there is a line of ten black people, if you are white, you go to the front of the line.   KKK was extremely active, so much so that we received threats because we were the only catholics in town.

Do you know what “twisting words” means?

Most of what he said was true, but he implied that I was suggesting things that I never suggested. Read my first post, then read his response and tell me he didn’t twist my words and make a bunch of assumptions.

If you really believe that my RL, field trainer and ATL were lying, then you live in a fantasy world. Nobody said blacks can’t make it, they said you have to work harder. Lol @ you disputing that.

You got holes in the bottoms of two pairs of shoes?  DOUBT IT

Nov 7, 2009 8:55 pm
I agree with Volt. Being black is an excuse. It’s the reason so many black people struggle today. They don’t do what’s right for them, instead they revert to, “It’s hard cause i’m black.” or “I was in dog fights because that’s how we do it in the streets”. Come on. Seriously.

The main point to this whole thing is black people are not doing things any more difficult these days than a white person. The problem is they segregate themselves. They act like everything is harder for them, then they create Miss Black Kansas, Black Entertainment Television, Black Appreciation Month. I mean, it’s understandable that 60 years ago things were horrible for them, but seriously. White people have been through some sh*t too. Died in World Wars, Disease, Civil War, Plagues, Emancipation from OUR original country, murder, torture, etc… Just makes me a bit angry because the only thing holding them back is themselves and we get the blame. If a black person can’t get something done or can’t get into the school they want, it’s the white people. Black people are about 80% of the prison population, it’s the white people. You fail in your business, it’s a white person. You get fired from your job because your a lazy bastard, a lawsuit begins and it’s because of the white person. We have a Black President though, and i’m pretty sure the white people helped there. If we had a White Entertainment Television, we’d be racist.

I have alot of black friends, who ALL agree with this, so it’s not just me, but then again they are all WELL educated. It’s alot like borrowing money from a friend. You borrow $100 because you are in trouble, then for the rest of your life they hang it over your head, except with black people, most of the ones living today hang it over our head, when the majority weren’t even affected by what happened 60 years ago. It’s nothing more than an excuse for their own failures. Still@Jones, are you black?

Just do your job. Stop acting like skin color means anything. There is a new black guy in my region. Super nice fellow and he’s kicking ass. i’m in the south too. I wish the race card would be burned by you guys so we can worry about things important like blowing up Muslims before they go on a shooting rampage on our own military bases.
MJ, seriously, you are buying into one guys opinion of why you and your
fellow blacks do not have the same opportunity. We don’t need a youtube
clip to know it’s easier to hail a cab as a white man in NYC.  There
are racists and stereotypes everywhere for every section of the
population.  When I bump up against a sista in the club she
automatically thinks “I can’t dance, can’t jump, and have a small
c*ck”  Is that fair?  Of course not… I CAN JUMP!  None of it matters
in our careers.

Point is this job has varying degrees of difficulty for all of us.
When you take into account the dynamics of our personal situations its
a wonder anyone makes it.  All I know is what I’ve been told and see.
People without that rich uncle or that get a branch have to grind it
out to win.  Black, white, male or female makes no difference.  It’s a
grind. Some are tough enough, some are not.  When someone like this
chick that started the thread makes her race an issue as to her ability
to succeed in this career it annoys me and I’m happy to call her out for
it.  Her ability to succeed is entirely dependent on her ability to
withstand the grind.

I like your posts, but this is not only ignorant, its just plain stupid.

My field trainer, regional leader and ATL ALL said that this job is a lot more difficult for a black guy than a white guy

Maybe it’s different for me because I live in the south…but I know FOR A FACT that white people do not respond the same way to a black guy walking around their neighborhood as they would with a white guy

If youre not black please stfu because you dont know what youre talking about. Youre probably a nice person who treates everyone fair so youre assuming that everyone else is like you. NEWSFLASH, everyone isn’t like you. I mean damn, a WHITE police officer that came to stop me from soliciting said “I know you’re not up to anything, but you know how these old white people are” get the fukk outta here

And stop fukking bringing up the pursuit of happiness, god damn. are you fukking serious?

****

You stated that you know for a fact that white people respond differently to a black person walking around their neighborhood. You stated that it is difficult. You are setting yourself up, in case you fail, to have an excuse. You don’t need to STATE it. It’s obvious.

Find another way. I did. I have olive skin. The DAY I got back from Iraq for good, with my uniform hanging in the back of my car, I was pulled over by a State Trooper. It still happens. Who do you think gets pulled aside at the airport more, guys like me, or guys like you?

No one says you have to knock on doors. Go for it if you want to. The problem isn’t white people. A client of mine owns a mortgage firm. He says that black people with money would rather have white people manage their money. He is black.

YOU must change people’s perception. Most people in this country will look past race and see you as an individual, if you give them the chance.

You want to give volt crap about the Pursuit of Happyness? Guess what, he overcame those barriers. No chip on his shoulder, he just DID it. You can too.

Don’t think of reasons why it’s hard, think of reasons why you will succeed. Negative thoughts will kill you in this business. Kill you.

So, keep a smile on your face at all times, speak English, tout your affirmative action granted business school degree, take a knee, drink some water and DRIVE THE FCUK ON!!!

i was gonna thank you for serving the country, but I’ll pass on that since you assumed I got an “affirmative action granted business school degree” and you felt like you needed to tell me to speak english. You must have been a sh1tty student in school. You need an SAT equivalent of about 1500 to get the National Merit Award. If you score that high why the fukk would you need affirmative action?

Some people join the military to help the country, some go because they didnt do well in high school and they have very few options. Which category did you fall in?

Your use of profanity while attempting to make a point puts into serious question your intelligence and the validity of your claims.  To further your point, do you dispute the fact it’s easier for a black student after highschool to get into college and get financial aid? Please spare us the education system has bias just answer the asked question.

Some white people, not all, maybe not even the majority.  Your assumptions are offensive. That shoe fits on your foot too Cinderella.

I cosign this post, if you can grind it out ANYBODY can make it. I’ve met minorities with pretty severe speech impediments who have made it past PDP at Jones.

I’ve been posting here for over a month and I never brought up my race. I only did it in this post so I could tell the threadstarter what Ive seen, and what my RL, Field Trainer and ATL told me. This job is incredibly difficult for ANYONE. All I’m saying is that being black does make it a little harder, especially if youre using the Jones method (I think being a woman makes it harder too).

It is definitely easier for a black student to get into college, but I cant cosign the financial aid part.

One of my friends (black) in high school had the same grades/test scores as me, but his parent made good money and my family was broke. I got a full scholarship and he had to go to a different school because the school we wanted to go to didnt offer him any money

people love to talk about how blacks have to meet lower academic standards , but they never talk about the reasons why. I went to a middle school with rich white kids, then I went to a poor 95% black high school. If you experienced both of these environments you would understand why expectations are different.

And if white kids want scholarships all they have to do is go to one of these poor schools with nothing but blacks and mexicans…most of them wont subject themselves to that though. Almost all of the white kids that went to my high school got scholarships.

Dude, I have an MBA with a 4.0 from a top 25 school that I worked my a$$ off to get into. I have passed two levels of the CFA exam. I scored a 720 on the GMAT. In addition, I have a degree in Biochemistry and have published two papers, one on Estrogen Receptor Knockout Mice and how the ERKO breed can possibly reduce the ability for breast cancer to metastasize. Another on the flaws of Biometrics in Industrial Security.

I joined the military to fight. I also joined because I believe some things are greater than myself.

You want to talk high school? I graduated 4th in my class out of 608. Admittedly, I was in a ghetto area, but hey, what are you going to do. High school was a breeze, which made it a lot more difficult to score as high on the SAT as you did (I got a 1340) (correlation between low socioeconomic schools and low SAT scores is a fact). However, once I was in an academic environment that challenged me, I rose to the occasion.

I will begin my Ph.D. in the spring. Economics.

Don’t talk to me about being educated. Tell me, on the SAT (or ACT), was there a place to put race?

Nov 7, 2009 10:22 pm

mj - shows how much you know about public education. Magnet schools are in poor neighborhoods for precisely that reason. Magnet schools have better teachers, better programs, yet WHITE kids have to be bussed in.

I applied to the same school as a black guy. Marcus Cole. Great guy, but dumb as a brick. He had a 2.9 GPA, along with 1020 SAT. Guess what? He got in, and I didn’t.

THAT is affirmative action. YOU may not have needed affirmative action, and good for you if you didn’t. I will put my foot in my mouth and apologize for that statement. As for speaking English. I grew up in the 'hood. And even I lapse sometimes. If you had to struggle, sometimes the 'hood comes out. But if you took offense, I apologize.

I stand by everything else. Don’t talk about how hard it is. Talk about how you are going to MAKE it.

Good luck with your P.H.D

Of course theres a place to put race on the SAT, they have that bubble on the tests you take in elementary school. My score was similar to the white kids that got the award so it wasnt a race thing.

I already said it’s easier for black kids to get in college, I was talking about financial aid

And I don’t agree with affirmative action, I think people should be helped based on their income levels, not race. A poor white kid is going to struggle a lot more than a black kid with two professional parents.

I think you misread my post, I went to a high school in the hood. It’s one of the roughest schools in my city. I went to a rich white public middle school because my mom knew that would give me a good foundation.

and yes, there is a correlation between socioeconomic status and test scores…which is why they evaluate blacks and hispanics differently. This method is flawed, because blacks and hispanics who come from households with money take advantage of the system while poor whites and asians get the shaft.

Nov 7, 2009 10:24 pm

I was a terrible student. Finished in the bottom 50% of my HS class.  Went into the Airforce.  Hurt my knee jumping out of a plane.  Went to community college.  Did well.  Went to Duke as a visiting student.  (anyone can do this!) Got accepted at Duke after a year of classes. Got my degree.

WTF does any of that matter to my business?  Not a damn thing.
