How do you Indy guys cover your offices if you want to take a vacation out of country for a few weeks?

I have seen some use virtual secretaries. Others get a international cell phone plan to check messages, I once went to Nice and rented a wireless card for my laptop over there. Much cheaper than using a US based one and using international roaming minutes.

Plenty of people here to manage things.

Cali .. I don't vacation with a phone or computer.  Just a personal choice, ya know.  Can you truly leave the business behind if you are Indy?  I like to travel and love to get primative.

Moraen, I think your set up is different than most Indy offices.

Volt - there’s also the internet. I use video conferencing also. iChat is awesome. You can leave easily. What’s the difference from leaving for a month at Jones and leaving as an Indy?

My dream vacation would be one where I had to balls to leave my phone and laptop behind:)

Can you prep your clients. Tell them you are taking an unconnected vacation. I think most people would be ok with that. Call your custodian/bd and ask them if it is ok for clients to call the trade desk if they need to place any trades.

When I was still at a wire, if I went anywhere that didn’t have cell service, my assistant would just answer the phone and tell them I would get back to them. Nothing urgent ever came up.

That’s cool, thanks for the feedback.  Just curious.  At some point in my career I’ll be able to travel again.  I think if I went Indy I’d set up the expectation that I’d be out of the country a few times each year.

M .. no idea how it works at Jones accept (opps except) that you have a BOA and can maybe offload some work on her?

oh, in that case when you do go indy make sure to ask the custodian/bd how they handle client calls.

I never had an issue with it. I was always told it was ok for the client to call in as long as they had their account number.

Your BOA should be doing the same work when you are gone as when you are there .

The only thing your BOA shouldn’t be doing is making trades and prospecting.

I did that this summer - 3 months after going indie, after most of my clients were in, i went to the Carribean for 2 weeks. My clients know i do this every summer, and i prepped them all a week before leaving. I am lucky in that i have a friend who is indie with the same B/D next door to me, (not part of my business, two separate businesses) and so i was able to forward the calls to him. But i think he got 3 calls the whole week. And if someone wants to do a trade, they can call the home office client services who will do it for them and charge you a few bucks. Its easy - And we work hard, if we cant do stuff like this, whats the point?
