I am currently in the recruiting process with EJ and I don’t know what
to expect. They’re talking about providing me with training for 11
months and helping me to open up my own office in my area.  I know
starting up my own business will be hard.  I need to know if anyone is
familiar with their program

Are  they a subsidary of someone? Primerica or Madoff Securities..  That name doesn't sound familiar.. I don't think they are an indy or RIA firm..  It might just be a local bank.

Is this a house? Is this the Arsenio Hall show?

Here's a little history lesson.   Edward Jones was one of the best football players in NFL history.  Without any doubt, he was the best wide reciever to ever play the game.  He's an absolute legend in St. Louis.  He was born and raised in St. Louis and then skipped college and walked on to play for the St. Louis Cardinals.  Upon his retirement he coached the team for many years.  The stadium where the St. Louis Rams now play was named in his honor after his death.  (Look up Edward Jones Stadium.)

During the off seasons, he worked in the brokerage business and not so coincidentally, he worked with Madoff who happened to be marginal wide receiver also with the Cardinals.

After his "retirement" from coaching (many of you will remember the 1968 betting scandal that centered around him betting on his team), he went on to form his own brokerage firm which he named after himself.  The firm, Edward Jones, is still around today and I believe that there are offices in more than one state.  However, his gambling did get him in huge financial hotwater and his much more successful friend Bernie Madoff did bail out his firm.  What I don't know is whether Madoff Securities owns a piece of the firm and if so, what that means for its future.

Seriously dude, if some firm is saying their name is Edward Jones look out, because I think it’s a scam.

Cate, just a word of caution...if a firm promises you an office, but first wants you to work out of your car "for awhile" and knock on a bunch of doors to "introduce yourself", you are probably an unwitting pawn looking for cash for a giant Ponzi scheme.  Criminals don't like permanent addresses that are easy to track.  When they are forced to use them, they usually attempt to disguise them by hiding them in strip malls among dry cleaners, mattress shops and Subway restaurants.  Sometimes they even operate out of converted gas stations to further their disguise, often painting buildings green to blend in with the local environment.  They'll encourage you to join various civic, networking and charitable organizations to further camoflage their criminal intent.  To monitor your actions, rather than the more obvious electronic listening devices, they'll plant a mole in your office under the guise of someone to assist you with your duties.

I could spend a lot of time telling you more about how such schemes work, but I'll simply close with this warning...if what I have described sounds familiar, carefully do your due diligence before committing yourself to such an organization.
