I received four calls today from people wanting to sell me names!

I hang up most of the time. But this last one decided to ask questions.

They could not prove to me how they got the names.

Could not prove how the surveys were done.

After asking just a couple of questions the guy passed me off to his manager.

The only thing they told me that made since was how they got my name, off the LPL web site.

They must set these shops up on daily basis.

I get calls from list companies all the time. I gave a couple a try, particularly during the winter when door-to-door just wasn't possible. They were useless, for all thereasons often mentioned on this site. But as long as I choose to do this work, I'll be looking for an effective way to find qualified prospects. I'll admit it, I don't prospect well. I don't like it. I have 30+ years of sales success, but in an industry where the prospects were given. So I'm wondering where you guys consistently find your clients. Just cold calling and cold walking?

Mostly...until you build up enough to start generating some referrals and picking up business through people you meet in situations where you aren't really "prospecting."  It is very hard to get going though (for most people).  If you are old enough that good prospects are your age, I'd try to sit down with anyone you've ever dealt with in a non-threatening way to look for people you would want to know (CPAs, HR people, self-employed, divorcees, etc etc).  The old "ask for advice" tactic...as in "hey, I can help people who are worried about x, do you have any personal connections to people that talk to those folks regularly?"

A cheap source for names.  All of the other list companies exaggerate what they are selling you at best and lie at the worst.
