What’s the most memorable, non-Griswoldian, family vacation you can recall?  I’m trying to come up with something a little beyond the Sea World, Disney, lake, beach, etc. normal routine.  Anybody have anything really cool set up for the family unit this summer?

Two-wheeled - Here’s what we’re doing.

10 days Marathon key. Renting a sailboat and diving for eight days with my newly minted open water diver daughter. Should be awesome.

Last year we did Greece. Athens, then a tour to Kalumbaka (Meteora) and then on Santorini for some diving, fishing and relaxing. Beautiful sunsets. That time we went with my parents. We also spent a few days in Paris and a few days in Germany on either end. That was the best vacation so far.

Mackinaw Island, Michigan. You have to stay on the island at the Grand Hotel over July 4th weekend. Most of the tourists go back to the mainland at night. Combine that with the fact that there are no vehicles on the island and you have an extremely peaceful vacation.

We always pick a city we have never been to and stay for 4-5 days. Do the local children museum, play(theater event), and eat at the local places…

Last summer we did a tour of all those crazy places to each on the travel channel…

I have a buddy that took a job in Oklahoma, so after seeing this "free" diamond mine in Murfreesboro, Arkansas on the Travel channel, I decided to visit him and make a camping a trip out of it.  Look up the diamond mine, it's actually pretty cool and there have been some big finds (http://www.craterofdiamondsstatepark.com/).    Anyways, he and I are both from a long ways away from Arkansas and when we drive up to enter the park site, the park ranger stops us, and in the most redneck kind of voice says, "Lemme see yer boys' ID's".  So we take them out and give them to him, and he says, "You boys a loooong ways from home".  We left kind of weirded out by this guy, but the trip was cool.  I must say, Oklahoma and Arkansas can be fun and have great local BBQ.    We didn't find any diamonds, and actually gave up because it was too damn hot and muggy.  So I probably wouldn't go in August.

Rafting on the New River in WV is fun, unless you gotta purty mouth.

We own a timeshare in Captiva Island. Great beaches, pools, fishing, jetskis. wildlife, etc. We’ve been doing it for 20 years and every year has been great. Last year we fished for tiger sharks and caught 9. My son will have those memories forever. We have met people from all over the world and see them every year. Their families have grown up with ours.

Its more than a vacation.

Probably the most interesting thing we’ve seen as a family is this…

Check out the Thousand Islands in NY. Went there on vacation once, it was incredible.

I know it's a little far fetched to be a family vacation, but I highly recommend New Zealand.  I spent 5 months there and it was a life changing experience.  Very underrated location for traveling.  Think about it like having all the amazing things you can see in the United States but all smashed into an area the size of a large state... plus Hobbits.  It's worth it if you can survive the flight     [quote=Moraen]...Renting a sailboat and diving for eight days with my newly minted open water diver daughter. fly fishing in Montana

Jun 26, 2009 1:33 pm

I took the family to Ocacroke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina last week. That was a great family time. No high rises on the beach, no chain resturants, no chain bars. 14 miles of uninterrupted beaches with no development on the beaches…

fly fishing in Montana

I'd love to do that. Unfortunately, my wife is not a fly fishing person. Although we bought some land in northern Wyoming (near the border with Montana) that we want to build a vacation home on.

Razor - PM me your email and I can send you some info on dive locations in Austrailia, Europe and the Carribean. I also have the best dive shops to use. And a couple of them will even give you a discount if you use our names. "I'm kind of a big deal" Ron Burgandy. Actually, I think you may just mention my wife's name, because they usually like her better.

Sounds like you are an adventurer - we also do a lot of mountaineering - if you want a good guide who travels around the world and will take you to some good places, let me know.
