How would one go about obtaining a list of newly divorced people? Is it a matter of driving down to the courthouse and requesting public records or are their websites that offer this type of info. Thanks for your help.

Look for people that have big smiles on their faces.

Most newly divorced prospects I’ve met have lost most of their money.  I’m wondering what you’d hope to sell to these people.

Get to know some divorce attornies.  I've gotten referrals from them before.  Oftentimes, one person in the marriage handled all the finances.  After the divorce, the other side sometimes comes into a decent bit of money from the settlement and have no idea what to do with it.

I know of a bar in Denver where a lot of divorcees hang out. You might check there. Many of them are ugly, so don’t drink too much.

I know of a bar in Del Mar (hell, all of Del Mar) where the divorcees hang out. They are all cougars, looking (and acting) like they are 28 when in reality they are 48… Anybody watch that show Age of Love with Mark Philippousis? The 48 year old hottie who looks 30? Yeah, they ALL look like her… Might be a good place to start. Give me a call, I’ll meet up…

Come on down… Although one evening in Del Mar during Track Season will make you want to leave your wife…

Find the women - then ask them.

"Can I ask you a personal question?  DID YOU TAKE HALF OF HIS 401K???"

Jul 13, 2007 9:48 pm

Even if she did (take half of his 401(k)) most plans will not allow a rollover until he becomes otherwise eligible to rollover (separation of service or attainment of age 55)

No as true today, more true a few years ago.........

madabroker - the stubby hubby will typically take and eat the 401k distribution - then pass it on to the cougar.

As mentioned ealier in this post - you want a referral from the divorce attorney - they've already qualified the person.  However, note that you don't want the men from the divorce, for they usually don't have anything left.  To truly capitalize on this niche - you need the freshly divorced women.  Caution - if you're a man, it will be very difficult to land a 'man hating, newly divorced, wealthy' woman.  If you're a woman FA (preferably divorced yourself) - you can clean up in this market.  Host seminars on 'how to move on', or 'how to ensure your x-spouse suffers'.

I’ve worked with several brokers who use this business model. They all use referral relationships with lawyers.

Actually, I successfully used David Bach's "Smart Women Finish Rich" seminars to get a lot of good clients.  I think some women showed up just to get a yuck at a guy trying to teach women about taking charge of their finances.  I saw the reservation list, and it had some pretty high level women on it.  I thought I needed to break the ice a little so they would be open to the message, so I said this:

"Who here has the joint checkbook with them" (all hands go up)

"Now you know why I invited you here.  The goal tonight is to put more investing decisions INTO the hands of those who ALREADY CONTROL the money, does that make sense?"  (Most smiled)

From then on, we had fun.........
