I can't wait for some of the fun responses we're going to get on this one, but I would also hope for some serious ones as well.  What do you independents out there name your firms?

Say my name is John Smith.

Smith Financial or Smith Investments are leading the race at the moment.

Smith Wealth Management did not get approved by compliance.

I use Smith Financial Group.

I am a Financial Advisor for the Green Machine.  We are ranked #1 in customer service.  After all, soylent green is people.

I tried for "Truth Financial" and a few others along those lines, they got thwacked.

I absolutely did NOT want a "MY NAME" firm, I think it shows a lack of imagination and foresight that makes my skin crawl.

If you are looking to be a one man shop your whole existence then by all means, go the way of the local plumber and house painter and apple farmer and Smith of all trades.

That having been said, I chose to make the name of my firm be what my name MEANS (it happens to be a good thing, depending on which way you look at it). That way I can take the pride in having my name and my heritage on the door, but my associates don't need to feel the weight of my name and the questions of their clients when their name was going to be added.

Interesting strategy.  Although I hope it's not too off the wall.  We have a couple of groups in our town with strange names and when I hit up their clients for business most of them can't even recall what the name of the firm IS.  Just their advisor.  Keep it simple at least.

"I use Smith Financial Group"

"Group" probably won't make it through your compliance if you don't have other producers as part of your DBA.

i'm not indy, not even considering it at this point, but i know this much:

the following words will not be in the name if i ever do go that route:

AMERICAN

EAGLE

FIRST

PINNACLE

PREMIER

PRINCIPAL

TOP NOTCH

TOP BRASS

(I have seen all of these before, might as well call it "Broken Record Investments")

Really? I've got bad news for you...it sailed right through. That was a really stupid comment.

Jun 14, 2007 4:18 pm

BH, I don't have any doubt that it will sail through with some B/D's.   This is why I said "probably".  It depends on the B/D.  I was unable to use "group" when I set up mine.

Jun 14, 2007 4:36 pm

Onlygoinup Group

Jun 14, 2007 4:54 pm

I love my firm name...doesn't include my name and it's been a hit with clients and prospects alike.  If I share it with you, I'd have to kill you though...

I'll give you this...I chose a name that projects strength and wealth and there's no question what I do for a living.

...and no, it doesn't include a famous name like Rockefeller...

Gad12,

Yeah, mine is pretty simple, and catchy too.

Jun 14, 2007 5:08 pm

Mine is uses an inclusion and variation of historical and natural features of our area, with Financial Services in the name.

I also didn't want My Name Financial Group or anything like that, because at some point I plan to retire and sell the business.  Who would want to buy Dust Bunny Financial Group if that wasn't their name too

The stupid part of your comment was the fact that you think I just made it up and had yet to submit it. Other than that, you're brilliant.

Could be. Plus there would be a select group of weird clientele that would like the name as well.  Hmmm.  Food for thought

Mr. Smith, Mr. Barney, Mr. Merrill, Mr. Lynch, Mr. Pierce, Mr. Finner, Mr. Smith[2], Mr. Goldman, Mr. Sachs, Mr. Morgan, Mr. Stanley, Mr. Bernstein, Mr. Sterns, Mr. Fisher, Mr. Raymond, Mr. James, Mr. Jones, Mr. Edwards, Mr. Waddell, and Mr. Reed might have an objection to your foresight comment.
