According to yearly reports, Morgan surpassed previous first-place holder, Merrill Lynch, with $110.9 billion in total capital (equity capital plus long-term debt). Goldman Sachs finished second with $105.8 billion.

Merrill, which had boasted the most capital for the last 17 years consecutively, now sits in third place, with $102.6 billion.
