Does anyone have experience with H.D. Vest?  Are there better alternatives for someone with no book and wants to operate indepently?

Yes.  Raymond James.  You won't start indy there, but you can go indy later with them.  Their setup looks much stronger than HDVest, but to be honest, it's been awhile since I looked at HDV...and ruled them out real quick...

I have been with HD Vest for about a year.  I have had no problems with them.  You will really be on your own.  When I came to them though I had over four hundred tax clients and have been able to convert quite a few without any hard sell.  There is not much in the way of training, but I enjoy that they do not call and bug me a lot.
