settled with former firm , after several months they called me and said they lost the check i sent them . i have the signed settlement agreement . Seems to me thats their problem and that iam under no obligation to correct their mistake by sending them another check ? 

  anybody have an opinion

Are you seriously asking this question?  That’s like asking if you REALLY owe the IRS taxes because your employer forgot to make withholdings on your paycheck.  You owe the money.  Delaying will just, well, delay the inevitable.  It’s all in writing.

Ignore these other guys, you have done your part.  Through no fault of your own, they failed to cash the check.  You no longer have to pay the settlement, or your mortgage for that matter.  Welcome to Amerika.
