We’re interviewing a guy today at our office who wants to transfer from EDJ.  He’s a young guy, only been in a couple of years, and he says one of the reasons he wants to leave is that EDJ is behind the times technology-wise.  Specifically, clients can’t check out their accounts online.  Is this true?  Clients can’t go online and check out their balances or anything?

Patently false.

Even when I was there they could check it. In fact, I transferred an account this morning from Jones. We met at a coffee shop, where he showed me his account at Jones online.

Another $900k coming this way.

Lol, nice work.  I just thought I’d check, as that sounded pretty absurd.

He’s lying. They can check it. It’s called Account Link. Sounds like maybe he didn’t do enough homework on things. Maybe not a good hire lol.

Are you sure he didn’t say that clients can’t place trades online?  I figured every FA knew that our clients can use Accountlink to check their stuff online.  They talk about it in almost ever statement run and a lot of the HQ sponsored mailings.

If I were you, I'd not hire someone that...um...clueless.

not completely absurd…There’s some technology at Jones that’s pretty pathetic.

I needed to see a “broadcast” and was given a choice of driving to another FA’s office at an exact time to watch it or to have their assistant record it on a VCR for me to watch later.
Note: this is not a broadcast of some sensitive information…It’s just some crap on selling insurance.

Any 14 year old could post a video file on a secure server and wire me (don’t get me started on “wires”) the password. But, at Jones, you have to drive to an office to receive the “Satellite” broadcast!!!

Hmmmm…maybe this hurt my motivation too…gee! I sure have lots of excuses!!!

It’s a little absurd when brokers don’t even know what they can provide their clients with.

I would avoid hiring this kid, unless he is talking about trading, like Spiff said.

He definitely meant looking at accounts online.  He said he would call the home office and ask them to e-mail his client their most recent statement if they were curious about their account value.  The more I think about that last sentence the more I want to crack up laughing at thinking of a concerned client on the 24th of the month wanting to look at his balance and current holdings and ending up with an e-mailed statement that is over 3 weeks old.  I think our decision was pretty much made before this fiasco, but this definitely helped confirm it.

I’m calling BS. Jones doesn’t have anyone with that much money.

The guy had his account at Jones for two years. Before that he was with an independent at Schwab, so he certainly didn’t MAKE the money at Jones!

So three brokers in a tad over 2 years? That guy is a nightmare waiting to happen.

Aug 6, 2009 11:45 pm

Can you blame him for leaving Jones?

The indy guy retired, and sold his book to someone out of state.
