Using the “ML Rule” sure doesn’t seem like a
good way to get referrals.  Besides, don’t they charge based on %
of AUM, like an RIA would?  What you’re talking about sounds like
the Ameriprise or Waddell & Reed model.  But then again, I
haven’t had any real experience in the industry yet, so what do I know.

Every firm at which you are a registered rep is like this. That’s the
difference between being a registered representative and registered
investment advisor.

even that means passing up a commission-based sale.  It seems like
having this attitude would build long-term trust and add them as a
permanent client to build my AUM.[/quote]

Bleh, when you can make 6% on a million dollar VUL policy, then we will
talk. The conflict is always there, weather you chose to exploit it is
up to you and your production quota.

I got an internship simply by calling all of the FAs in the area and
pitching myself. Just be patient, let them do the talking, and don’t be
afraid to ask for the interview.

I did cold call on the job. No, there wasn’t any formal training or
lisencing, so I couldn’t actually give advice or even talk about the
markets/products. All I did was let them know of seminars we were
hosting and if they had any questions about their finances to set up an
appointment. I was able to fill two seminars that summer, one with 3
buying units and then next with 5.

Before you can even call the numbers, you have to check them through
the national DNC registry. This process takes 20 elligible numbers and
gives you 1 that you are legally able to call. That number is usually
disconnected or no longer in service. Frankly, I think I could have
better spent my time planning and hosting a promotional event.
