If they could clean up their HIV, they could go back to being America’s #1 source of blood donations.

Or, maybe when you are covered under the Obama-care public option, you only get your transfusions from Haiti!

Interesting point of view.  I gotta admit some of that opinion I agree with.  Not all of it, but some of it.  It should be noted that this guy got fired from ESPN for this blog post.

[/quote] He has some very prudent points. And he didn't even mention the fact that I am sure the Red Cross squanders much of the money that is donated in times like these.

I think this is a magnificent article as to why some Americans feel they should help those less fortunate.

http://reason.com/archives/2010/01/18/luck-and-virtue-in-america-and

The simple summary is this:

Most of our good fortune: a (somewhat) stable economy, a stable political system, a stable judicial system and a healthy environment, is not something we personally created; but rather, we are the beneficiaries the hard work and fore-sight of people who came many generations before us.

Furthermore, when you look at history of economies which flourished, luck often played a greater part in the advancement of a specific region, more than effort.

I agree with the comparison of not helping the homeless man who is begging on the street. However, if a homeless man were to get hit by a car while he was walking on the sidewalk, I would have significantly more compassion. Haiti got hit by a truck.
