Approaching senior advisors to buy their books

I’ve been in the business a while but want to grow AUM. There are a number of senior guys ( probably late 50s to early 60s) who I’d like to buy their books one day when they retire and do a transition plan with them. I’m on decent terms with them, just friendly. Not sure if I should try to befriend them more for a while and just “hope” they pick me when they retire or outright approach them saying “I don’t want to be presumptuous, but I’d consider it an honor to work with your clients if you ever retire” or some such. The thing is, I do think that sounds a bit presumptuous and I don’t want to offend anybody. Any ideas on how to best approach the situation? Thanks.
