Mssb final interview

Oct 13, 2009 9:52 pm

Last interview with Complex Manager…any suggestions or comments?  Anything in particular I should expect?  Thanks.

ALSO...what are the new advisor benefits like?  Health?  Tuition Reimbursement?  Blackberry?  Laptop?  Thanks in advance.
Oct 13, 2009 10:18 pm

Seriously you shouldn’t be concerned with tuition reimbursement, cellphone or computer… All you are going to be doing is making contacts…

Tuition Reimbursement??? WTF?? Go teach 3rd grade public school

  Hahahaha   Well said.

You are a regular comedian...wanted to know about a laptop and cell because I plan on working more than the standard hours...I want the ability to work anywhere.  Also regarding the tuition reimbursement, I apologize for having ambition to get my MBA and I would prefer to go to an expensive school locally.  I want them to pay for it.  It makes sense in my opinion.  Thank you though for the valuable feedback it is greatly appreciated.

Free Advice - dont ever ever say these things to the complex manager if you want the job. They are not paying for your bberry, they wont pay for your cellphone and they certainly wont pay for your MBA, expecially in the first few years when you should be out at networking events every night or on the phone in the office. They wont like it if you tell them you are calling clients from home on your cellphone. And they certainly wont think you are an entrepeneur if you want them to pay your business expenses before you show them anything. I was a producing manager at SB until just before the merger. I had a blackberry. They didnt pay for it. Trust me, they wont pay for yours either.

If you want a cell phone, car, and tuition reimbursement I would suggest being a pharma rep. Pharma reps also get a car and a credit card for expenses. In this business you need two things: A list of names and a phone. That’s it.  The MBA, in my opinion,  is not necessary.

You will get a salary, medical and dental benefits, and there is a decent 401k. That’s it. The rest is up to you. In this business you are entitled to nothing. You will earn everything you get. To quote judge smails, “you will get nothing and like it!” This is the best business in the world because you will be rewarded for the effort you put in.

HAHA…Thank you, finally some intelligent responses.  I would never say any of that to the complex manager.  I was just curious how it works.  I agree completely with you guys, it makes complete sense.  I can’t wait to get through this last step of the process.  Thank you very much for the insight.

I guess I'll put the MBA off until I have a giant book.  I want to surpass 30 million in 1.5 years in...we will see...haha

ML does give a cell phone discount, 8000k a year in tuition reimbersement and will pay up to 105k towards  an executive MBA.

That being said, none of things matter if you don't produce.
Oct 16, 2009 7:20 pm

bullinchinashop, are you sure ml will pay up to 105k for an e mba?

Oct 16, 2009 8:42 pm

Citi-Morg will hire him. It looks like he is breathing and able to fog a mirror.

Oct 18, 2009 1:38 am

ML does that?  I wonder if MSSB does...  I realize it won't matter for awhile and I will need to produce for this to be considered.

ANYONE have any advice for the final interview with the complex manager at MSSB?  I'm nervous but the BM told me that it will just be a similar conversation as I had with him.  He was interested in hiring me after the first interview, since then I've just had to jump through 10 hoops...5 weeks ago it began...this process is long and brutal.
Oct 18, 2009 3:25 pm

Took me 6 weeks to get hired.  Interviewed with the BM once and that was it.  Already have my 7 & 66 so maybe it a different process.  Background check took 5 weeks.  Have not met the  complex manager.

Oct 18, 2009 6:45 pm

That’s crazy…I met the BM once for an actual interview then spoke with him a few times regarding the position and my business plan.  The background check took a couple of days and then they set up the interview with the complex manager.  That meeting is this week.  I’m hoping they let me know when I meet him.  I’m tired of this.  I just want to know…I turned down one position in hopes of getting this one.

Oct 18, 2009 11:54 pm

I think it depends what side you are on. Had a friend interview with MSSB, interviewed with BM, then BM and some HR guy, then BM again for an offer… ML was different he interviewed with BM, then didn’t have to interview with complex manager… But the MSSB was old MS office…thinks it makes a difference.

Oct 19, 2009 3:34 am

Well it’s the SB side.

Oct 19, 2009 7:05 pm

This process does take awhile!  I expect to get an offer this week, as I just sent over 2008 income info for them to formulate an offer.  I think it is pretty interesting that I haven’t even met with the BM or higher yet?  I know quite a few brokers within the office and I had a good meeting with the Asst BM.  Should be interesting??  What salary offers have you guys heard of recently?

Oct 19, 2009 8:05 pm

What kind of milestones & the time frame did they give you?

Oct 19, 2009 8:25 pm

I need to pull in over 30 million in 3 years.

Oct 19, 2009 8:26 pm

I’ve heard salaries generally start at 40 k but it depends on experience, etc.

Oct 19, 2009 8:30 pm

Wow, 30 AUM in 3 years!  That’s kickin’ butt!  My business plan calls for 30-35 by year 4…maybe it’s different in each region of the US??

Oct 19, 2009 9:54 pm

Well it’s 20 - 30 million.  I would like to surpass 30 million though.

Oct 19, 2009 10:36 pm

They pay 75-100 percent of previous full year income, up to you to negotiate.

Oct 19, 2009 11:14 pm

Dont forget to ask about how much vacation time you get, bm’s love that

Oct 19, 2009 11:28 pm

Vacation - Oh I plan on it!  Pay - 75-100% of last year huh…this should be interesting!

Oct 20, 2009 12:33 am

I’m going to let them tell me how much vacation time.  I’m going to negotiate around 60 K hopefully.

Oct 21, 2009 12:52 pm

It’s D Day.  Any advice for this last interview?  I doubt they will let me know today but I will soon find out if I get my dream job or have to settle for a job I don’t want with another company I don’t want to work for.  Stressful stuff…

The larger the salary the larger the goals.. Typical salary in a metro area is between $45-55K

Whoa you have no idea what you are getting into... The office is available 24hours a day, so no need for a laptop or cellphone to work from home..

MBA??? WTF! This is a sales position, MBA won't even be on your business card. If you want an MBA you chose the wrong profession...

Delusions of new people make me chuckle.. This is why the failure rate is so high..

It's not..

Of course they didn’t tell me whether I got it…he said he made around 40-60 K worth of cold calls his first few years.  I hope I can cold call but also find other ways to get business.

That's awesome. Just remember the more you get on the front end the less you'll get on the back end when you need it most.   Vacation? LOL yeah.   How does two days of paternity leave sound? Good luck with that vacation thing.

I hate to quote boiler room, but some of that stuff isn’t as far off as it seems.

Worst market in generations, and you are talking having them pay for an MBA (I have three degrees, MBA one of them no one else paid for my education), a cell phone, a lap top. You're so sharp you think you'll find other ways to get business? What are you going to do for those other ways to get business? Strip?       Exhibit A on how to fail out of the business:  Imagine the music from Twilight Zone. Here we have New Rep 17 and his magic pumpkin out getting business. With his handmade suit and Hermes tie, he uses a flute to attract million dollar accounts from the woodwork to his mighty book of business....   Imagine. No door knocking, no cold calling and no soggy hors d'ouerves at an overpriced networking event for New Rep 17.   He does it with no MBA (paid for by the production of others), no cell phone (paid for by the production of others) and no laptop (do I need to repeat the part about production?) to call his own......   We're about to enter the Twilight Zone
Of course they didn't tell me whether I got it...he said he made around 40-60 K worth of cold calls his first few years.  I hope I can cold call but also find other ways to get business.
Thanks but those questions were just that questions. I was curious how it works, if there were any other benefits. I’m not worried about making it.

Oct 22, 2009 7:13 pm

I thought this portion of this website was for newbies to ask questions.  I figured they wouldn’t pay for that stuff but I didn’t know.  Simple question.  I don’t have any disillusions about how difficult it will be to make it.  I also know that I probably won’t have time to get my CFP or MBA until at least after year 3.  I appreciate the bashing but you still have failed to discourage me.  I have a big network and I have already laid the groundwork to get referrals and immediate business.  I will have a Sr. Partner and I know what it will take.  I will probably have to cold call 2-4 hours per day, try to set at least 1 meeting per day, and try to make 30 contacts per day.  I also know if I can land a few solid 401 K’s I’ll be fine.  I thought I read on here that people fail at MSSB due to laziness, complaining it’s too difficult, not calling when available to call, working 50 hours, etc.  I also thought I read that the MSSB qualifiers aren’t as difficult to attain.  Moreover, I plan on working 7 am to 7-9 pm EVERYDAY, and 4-6 hours on the weekends.  As I said, I’m not concerned, I won’t be in the 80% who fails.

Oct 22, 2009 8:27 pm

Well - I just got hired!  I’ll be in the Nov 9th starting class.  Salary is decent, Bene’s are great, even got that unpopular time off that was discussed!  If they see that you are truly a potential asset to the company, time off is no problem!  Just make sure that you’re in Teir 1!  Good luck NewRep17

Oct 22, 2009 8:58 pm

hey there ringiton!  Now that you have an offer letter in hand, how about you run down what that looks like?  I think those in process would find it quite interesting and anyone considering MSSB would certainly find it useful.

Oct 22, 2009 9:17 pm

I think he/she enough identifible information.

Oct 22, 2009 11:29 pm

The complex manager said I had to speak to one other person more than likely over the phone.  I just don’t get it though…I mean the BM likes me, the CM likes me, what is the hold up?  I need to speak to this other guy but is there going to be any other hurdles?  Any other assessments?  Any other tests?  I mean it’s been going on for 5-6 weeks, I just want an offer and get it done.  I think they rarely hire people, I don’t they’ve hired anyone in the last year or possibly longer.  Any insight would be appreciated…I’m in the Chicago area if that matters or not.

Oct 24, 2009 3:49 am

Let us know how you make out with that.

bringiton, what was your starting salary? any relatively recent hires with MSSB are welcomed answer the question as well. Trying to figure out what I should ask for.
