AGE WB deal sucks for some

Jun 20, 2007 12:19 am

Yep - That's right, I feel like I got crapped on.

1 1/2 years into production with trailing 12 of $95k

7 million in assets.

what did I get?

$1600 bonus every year for 6 years. That's 100 dollars a month salary.  That's $25 per week.  Thanks AGE.

Probably going to get a paycut.

I'm locked into a training agreement - $75,000

So a 6 year broker with trailing 12 of $150,000 gets a $30,000 check.

I get 1/3 of that .... spread out over 6 years.

Someone, please someone, explain to me how this was a good deal.

Give me a logical argument, please.

Jun 20, 2007 12:33 am

They spent a lot of money training you and are STILL spending money because you are not profitable.

Stop looking for what you don't deserve and grow your business.

Jun 20, 2007 12:37 am

I figured you would say something like that - How can you say I don't deserve anything.

Why is it that companies (you may know these as stocks) get bought out when they are not profitable?

It's called a pipeline Ferris.  A Pipeline of Future Profits.

It's called growth potential - And they crapped on it.

Something I don't deserve?? Why does the 6 year making $150k deserve anything - Even $200k?  Yyou don't think they're getting tapped out?  What are they paying them for??

Jun 20, 2007 12:39 am

I'm not completely negative - I know this could be a good thing.  I am simply posting this as negative as possible.

I'm trying to way out the pros and cons.  The Cons are far outweighing it.

I'm Stuck.

My trailing 12 makes me sleep well at night. You sound angry. You are a piker who should get fired for taking up space that could be given to someone who can produce.

Jun 20, 2007 2:49 am

Trolling around trying to provoke people?  Your whiny bitch post was more of a troll than anything.

Stop looking to what pikers in your branch got and stop WHINING.

Tell you what, if you want to know how much you are worth, give Merill Lynch or any other firm a call.  Set up an interview and give them the details of your business.  The number they put on a piece of paper is what you are worth.

I agree that you are the future pipeline of production to the firm, but as part of your training agreement you AGREED to do that.  Now you're looking for more even after all the money they spent on you?  Don't be greedy.  Do your job, make your calls, and smoke those piker brokers in your office.

Jun 20, 2007 2:50 am

Like I said - People like you are going to be the people that make me wealthy.

I told you, don't try and do battle with me.  No one here values your opinion anyway.

And yes, I am steaming a little bit.  I didn't sign up to get bought out and slung around like a corporate puppet.

I think what makes you sleep at night is spilling your negativity on this forum.  When you go to sleep tonight, ALONE, ask yourself a simple question.

"I wonder who really gives a f*& about me."

Let me know!

Jun 20, 2007 3:01 am

FreeLunch,

Stuck?  Stuck???  Children in Darfur are stuck.  You are not stuck.  You are working for one of the best brokerages in the best country in the only known planet with intelligent life in the known universe.

I started in this business young, too.  Younger than you actually.  I always wished I was further along than I was, until I was talking to one of my collegues in his forties, and he said to me that he’d trade his book for my next twenty years in a heartbeat, and asked me if I’d make the same trade…and of course, no, I wouldn’t give up the next 20 years of my life for any amount of money, let alone a stupid book of investment clients.

The point is, you can’t help when you were born, you can’t help when you were hired, and you can’t make your bonus any bigger right now.  Quit, or don’t.  But don’t complain about what “bonus” you are or aren’t getting…because in 20 years what will it matter???

BH, you’re still a douchebag.

Jun 20, 2007 3:03 am

Thanks BankFC

That's really the perspective I need to have.

I'm a pretty anxious person anyway, and this whole deal has me shook up.

Seriously, thanks for the advice.  You are right.

No offense, but at your production level you should be grateful that they threw you a bone.  It's good that you're growing nicely and have made it past the first 18 months, but you've got a while before you can run with the big dogs, junior.

Life isn't always fair.  Your timing isn't always going to be perfect.  Now stop whining and get back to work.

 <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

From the very large producers that I have heard, their opinions on the package are flat to negative. Good chance many of the larger producers will leave. FC’s that are older do not like it at all. The package would involve 10 years to be entirely vested.

The lower producers got a GREAT deal as nobody thought they would get anything. Speculation is the payout was all about trying to keep moral up in the 5 year or less FC’s.

“1.5 years with a T12 of $95,000”

That puts you just a hair above average in production for 1.5 years. 7 million in assets is lower than average. I’m shooting for 25 million by the end of year 2.

If you hang out you will probably get many inherited accounts when the big guys leave. There will be a good bit of B’s and many C’s that they won’t even care about. Service them well and pump them for referrals all will be well.

As for the contract if you have a good relationship with your manager he/she will probably let you walk as its enforced at the branch level. But where to walk and with what? All you would be doing is putting yourself back 6 months.

As for the incessant negativity on this forum … when I make it in this business I’ll probably have quite the ego as hard as this is. I hope I’m not a negative prick but who knows. For me those comments are white noise and expected.

Jun 20, 2007 10:57 pm

Let me clear up Two things about this whole $95k T12.

First of all, I'm in a small town where I am NOT from and have NO connections.  Got stuck in the town I went to college.

Second of all, I'm not satisfied and I was definitely NOT bragging.

I'm par for the road.  I'm AVERAGE.  Who likes being average.  I don't need to defend myself - Next month I am going to have A $30k month from a $500k VA.

I don't need everyone to tell me I suck.  Really.  I would have quit by now, and I would've been fired by now If I didn't think I would make it.  I'm starting to make a lot of connections, I'm getting good at cold calling, Im still 25 years old - I don't suck.  What are most 25 year olds doing?

I mean seriously.

If I would've known I would get this much negativity I wouldn't have posted.

Jun 20, 2007 11:33 pm

If you are looking for a shoulder to cry on this aint the place. If misery likes company this may make you feel better.<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I am still in the ‘sprint to 24’ I have one heck of a resume. I chose AGE out of many offers, one was HUGE, but I went with AGE. Now I’m a bank broker with a non-compete that has teeth.

You think it sucks for you?  I didn’t even get a kiss on the back of my neck let alone thousands of $$. Still, I force myself to find the opportunity in all of this.

Get a grip, you’re doing great, YOU ARE STILL STANDING where most have failed.
Jun 20, 2007 11:40 pm

I appreciate that Gaddock.  Thanks for the reply - you are right, and although some of these posts have been brutal, it really has put it in perspective.

Thanks again.

Bobby, with all due respect, you are in asshole mode on this thread. The guy feels bad enough, why do you need to piss on the kid? And if you did $225k your first year you should probably be in jail

Free lunch - there aint no free lunch. You;re doing ok at $95k t-12. Not great, but ok. You;ve proven that you can make it. But you havent made it yet. Whats more important, why the f*ck did you think you deserved a bonus? You should blow whoever decided that you should get $1600. Just because you are at a company that gets bought out? Just because the guy sitting next to you got offered more, because he is in the biz 3 times longer than you?

Chill out, get Wachovia-ized, its not such a bad place I;m sure, (i dont work for them), and build your biz. Then if you want you can go to the idiots at ML, MS, or SB, and gget a check for serious money, because then, you earned it. There aint no free lunch, FreeLunch!!!

Jun 21, 2007 2:06 pm

From what can see T12 of 95k buys you another year. Year two is where the rubber meets the road. Your pipeline should be full and by now you should have a handle on bringing in assets. That said your bigger problem is the culture shock of going from AGE to Wachovia. Wachovia is not the kind, gentle, employee first place that AGE is. You might want to open a dialog with the local branches of other firms or at least develope a departure plan.

Part of that plan should be to go into overdrive to bring in as many assets and do as much production as possible over the coming months before closing and integration. Next month's annuity is a great start. Doing this will make you very attractive to the competition as well as putting you in good stead with numbers driven culture at Wachovia.

As for the deal you got; you have the option of turning it down, which is what I would do if it comes with strings locking you into a time commitment.

If you work hard and build the assets and production your day of a big money deal will come. When it does you'll be in the driver's seat, able to dictate terms. Until then keep your eye on the prize.

My trailing 12 makes me sleep well at night. You sound angry. You are a piker who should get fired for taking up space that could be given to someone who can produce.
Not your trailing 12 now you dope.  What was your trailing 12 with 1 1/2 years in the business.

Free lunch you are doing GREAT.  I bet this guy has not brought in $7 million in the last 18 months.

You got screwed, and I just wonder if you can get out of the contract because AGE got bought out.
Probably about $225,000.

7% Annuities

5% A shares

It is not hard to reach $225k your first year.

He is building a fee based business.  I would have doubled your first year if I was not building a fee based business.

No, he's not and no, you wouldn't have.

Bobby, what are your production numbers and what is your LOS?

Free Lunch I started younger than you at AGE after being recruited by Merrill, and deciding that Jersey wasn't the place for me. No matter what you do, don't screw your clients, and you'll reap the rewards over time. I know tons of the "FCs" on this board love their annuity products, but don't get sucked in. Read as much as you can and provide the highest level of service you can. Then decide what products will work for each clients needs. Myself, I've never sold an annuity, and I don't have more than 5 fee based accounts. Despite that I have 60 mil AUM in my 4th year. My traditional brokerage based book doesn't generate the huge velocity that wrap accounts, and constant 1035 exchanges does, but my clients are happy. I'm about 75% of revenue from bonds and equities. At our age we plan on being in the business a long time,  take your "Free Lunch" and toss it in a ROTH and forget it ever happened.

I can't help but agree with everyone that says you don't really deserve anything. The Firm probably hasn't even re-couped your training costs, your branch definately has not. Your production is average, barely, and there are lots of brokers with t-12 of 96k with only 18 months in the bus that aren't here in 36 months. You need to crest the 4 year mark with at least 40 AUM to give yourself a solid shot of survival over the long term. Once you do that you will be a valuable asset for whichever firm you want to work for. No broker is getting "screwed" in this deal, and newer brokers with above average production for their tenure might get sweetened packages (Which would obviously please me).

Keep your chin up and learn to sell your services and expertise. Learn to network it will pay much bigger dividends than cold calling ever will! In my first 3 years I was out of the house every day from 7-at least 9 at night, learn to attend functions and you will become "that guy" in your small town that everyone trusts to answer their questions. Our town has 4,000 people, our brokers average over 100 mil AUM a piece, no one has placed a cold call in this office, myself included in 15 years. It can be done, keep your chin up and keep trucking!

YOu won't believe me. What is LOS?

Jun 22, 2007 2:54 am

Bobby.  You are awfully loud to be from such a quiet company.

I don't care what your numbers are.  I do care to hear about how you have become so successful.  Share.

What's your script?

How have you built a big business?

What's your motivation?

How do you prospect?

But I don't imagine you'll ever tell. Since you used your real name and all...

You don't need help. Your T12 is $95m. Forget about cold calling. It's for low producers, not you.

Notice Big Mouth Hull was quiet when asked to show his numbers.

LOS-Length of Service

SOL- What your  Back A**ward butt is.

Ca-Ching $$$$$ revised #'s are out for brokers under 60 months, and above average production. Sorry Free Lunch but 95k at 18 months didn’t make the cut (missed it by 25k).

numbers look good.  Sucks for Freelunch.
