Advice on where to start

Looking to make a career change into financial advising.  I would welcome some advice on what kind of company to start with and some good steps to start.  Below is some information on where I am at right now:

Ideally I would like to get into fee-based planning.   I have a friend who has a $100M+ book of business (who lives in a different state) willing to mentor me.   I own two businesses I have built on referrals that provide me with enough income to not need to make money right away.  I do not currently have any licenses.   I have a high-net worth network that I can start with to bring in business.
