Start Tomorrow

After reading some of the posts on cold calling and burn out…

Should I plow into it on my first day and see if I can make 300 dials, or instead pace myself into it? Like try 100 in the morning and 100 in the afternoon?

Dumb post, first day and you’re worried about burnout. Let the roast begin!

Oct 27, 2009 4:36 am

Cold-call burnout happens when you NEED something from the other person.  No matter how well you sound, if you instinctively NEED something from them, every “no” will hurt more and more.

If you don't NEED them, but you KNOW that they need YOU, then cold-calling becomes a LOT more fun!  You can observe people's reactions to you (and laugh at them) instead of being stung by them (because you need them and they said no).
Oct 27, 2009 5:15 am

Yeah that came off badly as I reread it. I meant was what is the best strategy when beginning cold calling. Go balls to wall and try to hang on or build up to a level?

Gordo, problem is I do need something... Are you saying I should act like I don't instead?
Oct 27, 2009 10:43 am

If you aren’t calling someone, what activity will you be doing instead?

Trying to make 300 phone calls sounds impossible to me at worst and miserable at best.  I can't do it.  I know plenty of others who can.    What I try to do when I have free time during that day is set same day appointments.  I'm looking for any reason I can to be able to do something other than sitting around making cold calls.   "Hi, Tom, blah, blah, blah...I am actually going to be driving buy your office today at 11:00.  Can I steal 5 minutes of your time?"  Then, before and after the appointment, I'll cold walk.   The idea of all day cold calling feels like being a telemarketer and it isn't for me.  Many others make serious cash doing it.

I say start at 150/ day but split it up… 50 morning, 50 afternoon 50 night… but if you get on a roll just keep going…The hardest part will not be the first day but to keep doing the next day, then the next day.

My guess is your business is on cruise control.   Some people put in 15 years for crap pay and then get canned with nothing and no where to go..

Obviously some of it you can't change regardless of when you start(time commitment). but are there things you would do differently(not investments, but prospecting, business model, etc)

Id go to med school.

It’s NOT worth it.

You so excited about getting your butts out there to try to kick ass.

You wont understand what I am saying until you are out for a few months.

And I’m not some whining loser who failed and is blaming.   Its just not worth it. Life to GD short. If you guys are trainees it is because you are smart, driven, successful studs, I was so driven to succeed you forget to take care of yourself.   You have to work your MF butt off for years.   It ruined a maraige and i missed years of my daughters growing up. And there are no magic bullets unless you have monster family money.

Looking back i think it would have taken more courage to quit then what I did.

I am on cruise control and have a junior partner. It took me YEARS to learn how to take care of me and leave the business.

None of you will listen to this cause you think your the man    You will understand some day

Ms. Twain,   Were you married to another woman? And if you were, can you send me a copy of the wedding video?   SN

Going to medical school is a long process… 4 years in addition to college, 2 year residency another 2-4 specialty… So that is a 8-12 year plan give or take…

I also think being at a wire is completely different than say, EDJ, INdys, Ray Jay indy(me).

You think im joking?

nope

here it is:

RULE 1:

You make progress in this business in ONLY 2 ways:

1)   calling prospects and clients

2)   meeting with prospects and clients

Do 1) and 2) above

as much as you possible can.

You WILL be doing a million.

RULE 1a    1) and 2 ) above suck.

If you EVER find yourself doing something different from 1) or 2) above

you are doing it because you are a pussy.

When you catch yourself not doing 1) or 2) above.

IMMEDIATLY start doing

1) or 2) above.

RULE 1a (1)   Work six days a week for at least 10 years.
