Would imposing term limits on members of Congress help get things done in Washington?

I guess this depends on your definition of “get things done”.
Term limits removes experienced politicians who know their way around the halls of various legislative bodies: who to contact for expertise and any given topic, when various committees meet, deadlines for proposals, which legislative items are close to being drafted and ready for debate, history behind legislative topics etc.
Term limits adds newcomers who know none of this and will be forced to rely upon lobbyists for assistance. Terms limits defines an end date for their job so instead of serving constituents to build bridges, they will be cozying up to lobbyists trying to secure a well paid job for life after politics.

Lack of term limits also opens the door to abuse,as well as disallowing new ideas. Since when is public service a full time, life time occupation? Now only should term limits be implemented, but a change in their lifetime entitlements as well. Funny thing, these people get into office, and they may be of modest economic status, but they all walk away with considerable wealth. Gotta make you wonder! As to experience…the only thing I see being learned is the art of stonewalling…nothing gets done in congress, and this must be experience reaching out

Oh yes,it would force them to work for a change, rather then prior to every election, spending tax payers dollars as they campaign for more dollars for their next Election Day …lets get a fair term of representation rather then more waste

Yes to term limits and change the presidential term to one 6 year term. The President already spends two years trying to get re-elected and is a waste and the last two years of a two term presidency is called a lame duck. Why don’t we “change” to the obvious? Maybe people would think deeper about who they elect.

Term limits are a good idea. Congress is to worried about the next election to do their job. Two terms then their done! No pension no benefits and they have to live under the laws they pass, just like the rest of us.

Yes I am firmly in favor of term limits since our congress is so inept. Please refer to my blog: timeforchangenow.net. I have posted a whole article I wrote on term limits and how it should be accomplished.

I’d support term limits on congress. Flush the toilet every now and then, so to speak…

I strongly support term limits for all elected officials. I don’t believe our forefathers ever intended for Congress to employ professional politicians. Political experience has its value, but should not take the place of fresh ideas, energy, current real world experience. We do our country a disservice by allowing individuals to gain more and more power to the point they can gridlock the country. Imagine if we had no term limits for President? How is Congress any different? Serving in Congress should be a “service to the country.” and not a career complete with a platinum retirement plan and golden health care.
