TV distractions
Just curious how many people have TV's IN their office. Not in their lobby or whatever. I'm talking tv/flat screen on the wall with CNBC, ESPN, Oprah, or whatever garbage you want to watch.
Beavis and Butthead don't count.
I don’t even have a TV in my home…high-speed internet…but no Television.
Nothing but a black hole in time.

Somebody told me once that the average child watches two hours of TV per day. If that child practices his piano two hours a day, or played soccer two hours a day he would get real good at playing piano or playing soccer. Watching two hours of TV every day makes you real good at … watching TV.
As for the office, I wouldn’t want my advisor watching financial stations. I’m sure you’d agree that stuff is like pornography.
I guess I should clarify. I have a TV, but no cable and never got digital television.
I originally made this decision (like 10 years ago) because I felt that the cable company was a monopoly and I didn’t want to give them my money. If it wasn’t for the 20% taxes added to a cable bill, they would certainly be broken up.
I still watch TV for entertainment. I have the 4-DVD Netflix membership plus they have a great selection of movies at my local library. What I don’t do is turn on the TV because I am bored and can’t think of anything else to do.
I never want to make TV time a black hole in my life…Other than catching headlines on the internet, I never want to know who Jon & Kate are or who Adam Lambert is…

I echo the statement that your kids hate you, or have no concept of reality(your kid gets beat up at school) Still... .so what do you do when you are bored? PS my kids watch tv and both of them are in the academically talented program at school, so your logic is wrong...My kid watches more TV than I would like. And I mean real-brain rotting stuff - Hannah Montana, Phineas and Ferb. But is 9 years old doing algebra and geometry.
TV is awesome for entertainment. I just hate paying the cable companies.

I guess if I had a kid(s) in school, I might have to cave in and get cable. I agree, I don’t want them to be outcasts…although, if it is a boy, I might give him a choice - a motorcycle or cable. I’d rather have my 9 year old learn how to ride than watch Hannah Montana…

We got AT&T's Uverse a while back. I've had DirectTV, Dish, and now Uverse. I like some things about all of them. I liked DirectTV's programming packages. It always bugged me that Dish didn't include Fox News on their basic package. I liked Dish's DVR better than Uverse. I've only had Uverse on my HDTV, so I don't know about the picture quality of them all. But, it can be storming outside and I don't lose my signal since in comes in through our phone line. Additionally, there isn't a dish on my roof. It's a small thing, but I always worried about the installers not sealing the holes in my roof properly. Hulu might work fine for a small computer window, but I wouldn't want to put that kind of low res feed on my big screen. ice - don't kid anybody about the reason you have the big TV's. It has more to do with Halo or Modern Warfare than Big Bang Theory in HD.I have heard of Dish and DirectTV. Actually, Big Bang Theory is a funny show. Ice we need to get some Halo going before the New Year. I’m sending the wife and kid to New York for a week. A week of beer-drinking and Halo with maybe a few strippers sprinkled in.

Wow, this is interesting. Watching TV together can be great family time (even edgy stuff when they get older). When "V" came out, we almost died laughing at the political satire, and we were making fun of the government, Hollywood, big business and the PC teachers who try to brainwash public high school students. ( Some things never change.) "24" teaches kids about dealing with terrorists. "House" is good for learning about how to deal with a$$hole doctors. "Monk" teaches respect for OCD folks. "Lost" is a stepped up version of the skills and strategies played out in "Survivor". I remember building a fireplace fire and camping in the family room with the family around "Survivor" and popcorn. The best way to teach kids to deal with and thrive in the popular culture is to embrace it. Being able to play the piano is nice, but being able to think for yourself is a function of cultural literacy. I have to agree, I hope your kids don't end bitter. What does being entertained have to do with being good at something? I watch tv for entertainment, not to get good at something. Your kids must hate you.

Being able to play the piano is nice, but being able to think for yourself is a function of cultural literacy. I have to agree, I hope your kids don't end bitter. Same goes with the internet. [/quote] They won't end up bitter. They'll just teach piano lessons from their home and be referred to by their neighbors as the "crazy cat lady" or "crazy cat guy". I couldn't agree more. We DVR everything. Until last night I had 6 weeks of Numbers waiting for me. My in laws don't have DVR and watching TV at their house is painful. ice - if you don't know what Big Bang Theory is, set your DVR to record it on Monday nights. CBS I think. Funny, my DVR tapes it so I don't really even know what station it's on or what time.This thread is a much better distraction than TV. Some real funny stuff in this one.

with Netflix you can rent most any series from the beginning, we are currently watching "The Shield"...awesome awesome addictive program. I HIGHLY recommend it to all. The only problem is that we watch it so often that our life revolves around it during that time...so crazy..but fun!

I grew up with cassettes and VHS, remember distinctly listening to my first CD (1812 Overture - you would have sworn you could her the cannon), and having to set my VCR up to tape episodes of Knight Rider when I wasn't home. Now, my kids don't understand why I can't just turn on whatever program they want if we're not at home and why Grandma and Grandpa watch the commercials. Local news provides absolutely nothing and every cable network is talking heads giving opinions over and over about every issue under the sun. CNBC -stock market talking heads, FOXNEWS - Republican talking heads, MSNBC - Jagoffs, ESPN - former players making bad predictions, CNN - garbage, and on and on and on. These cable outlets don’t report news anymore, they report opinions on recent events. I was just flipping through the channels and I was asking myself, who the hell is really watching Rachel Maddow ? Who the hell cares if Andre Dawson wears a Cub or Expo hat into the HOF ? Who the hell cares that Larry King is still alive and has a show ?
I don’t have a TV, but have a link to a website that is a feed of Bloomberg TV live. I turn it on some mornings and listen/watch, for 20 minutes whie i set up my day, or while i screw around like i am this morning. Gotta get off this site during the day. Now.

Depends on my mood. Mostly I’m into non fiction and read to educate myself about things that interest me. I’m reading Billiards books trying to improve my game for the sake of my Cash League team. Also, i’m the best read striper fisherman you’ll ever find. Catching the fish, not as good despite plenty of time on the sand. Put me on a boat, different story.
Recently, fiction to relax, Ford County, by Grisham and The Dome by Stephan King. First King novel i've read in almost 20 years. Now i'm back to non fiction and rereading John Fuller's The Ghosts of Flight 401. That's a scary story.Do you find that reading about sports (fishing and billiards) actually helps you, or that “knowing” all of these things gets in your way? I used to read stuff like that about golf and such. Just made me worse.
I took up playing tennis without “learning” how and now dominate the local guys.

Not even close. The biggest one was 18 inches.

It always hassled me that Bowl didn’t consist of Fox Information on their primary program. I liked Dish’s DVR better than Uverse. I’ve only had Uverse on my HDTV, so I don’t know about the image of them all. But, it can be storming outside and I don’t reduce my indication since in comes in through our range. Furthermore, there isn’t a dish on my ceiling. It’s a little factor, but I always concerned about the technicians not closing the gaps in my ceiling effectively. all best serials
I do and I need to have it on for my whole duration at the office. It has the opposite effect on me, it is not a distraction but rather something that keeps me alert and alive in my everyday’s hard work.
