Cuff Links

How many of you wear cuff links?

Should they match your shirt or your tie?  I was thinking they should match your tie, but when I found a pair of red cuff links (http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2996935?Category=&Search=True&SearchType=keywordsearch&keyword=cuff+links+in+All+Categories&origin=searchresults) my wife said they were to flashy.  I thought if I wore a matching red tie they'd look nice.    Any advice?

I wear cuff links when I wear a french cuff shirt.  Not always, but today I am.

I have a pair that have my initials engraved, a Bull and Bear pair from Tiffany's as a gift, and several different colorful pairs that match my ties (red, blue, purple, etc...).   I'm also a fan of pocket squares in the suit in the right situations.

If I had to pick, I’d say they need to match your tie.

A piece of advice for cuff links.  Antique stores.  You can find some really nices ones for really cheap.  I found a plain vanilla square silver set from the 50's for $2.50.  If you're into art deco, you can find some really cool ones there too.

Like many things, the Brooks Brothers store can make a potentially flashy or gauche purchase come of just right. I wear plain circular black onyx with silver casing links when wearing a dark grey or black suit, typically with a blue or white french cuffed shirt. I wear a fairly straight forward pair of gold links when (less often) wearing brown jacket/slacks with similar shirt combo. These two pairs seem to be enough for me, neither of which match the tie per se, aside from fitting in with a dark or brown suit arrangement. Very simple:

It does, however, go with the toned down watch I chose:

I’m with icecold that one should aim for class above flash but do not necessarily assume that links (if done tastefully) lead to the latter. If you’re wearing an over the top italian suite, a huge rolex, gator skin shoes, and a belt buckle that resembles a hub cab from an Escalade SUV, the links will only confirm that image.

What are you saying, you think my watch is too flashy?  http://ml.watchprosite.com/img/watchprosite/ml/41/scaled/ml_image.611241.jpg     OldSpice, this is acceptable attire for the professional advisor:  http://www.smackshopping.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/Bling.jpg

Well, since we're laying it all on the table, this is what I wear around my ankle.  It spins when I walk.  http://images.channeladvisor.com/Sell/SSProfiles/72000104/Images/3/spinner-bling-watch.gif

I’m all about french cuffs… My mom is in the jewelry biz, so I have an almost never ending supply of cuff links.  My two favorite pair are a steel and carbon fiber set, and a silver and tahitian pearl set.  Neither were very pricey, but I really like them.  I saw some really cool porsche gmbh cufflinks, they mimicked the tail lights, and wrapped around the outside as well as going through the button hole.

I wear a plain gold pair that was handed down from my late grandfather.

Very classy, timeless and simple.  Clients love it because it shows that I put effort into my appearance as I would into my business.  But of course, there are some clients who are totally comfortable with someone who is dressed down.  Hell I have closed deals in a blazer, button down and jeans/driving loafers (!!!!!)   Yes I know that I should be shot for that but I say, the bottom line is the bottom line.  Your clients wont even care if you stroll in one day in a Speedo if you are doing well for them.  Although I wouldnt recommend it with small children and elderly people around

PS OldSpice…the advisor attire picture is classic!!  I wish I could dress like Bishop Don Magic Juan to the office.
