Beer

Aug 17, 2009 9:11 pm

I like Beer.  I just want to get that out there.  In college, I drank swill.  I spent considerable time in Canada in the early 90’s, and developed a real affection for beer.  It had more flavor (or should I say more “flavour”), and more alcohol.  I have always been a strong Sam Adams advocate, although I must admit I have not kept up with some of their more unique brews over the past several years.  And more recently I have acquired a strong taste for stout’s.  My favorite is probably Beamish, followed by Guinness and Murphy’s.  Although I really only like them on tap, not from the bottles or cans (although the Guinness cans are not too bad).  Murphy’s is a bit deeper than Guinness or Beamish, sort of “smoky”.  But they are defintely an acquired taste, like red wine, coffee and beer in general.  What I really like most about it is it’s smoothness - very slight carbonation - enough to taste like beer, but not enough to fill your belly with air.  It’s one of the few beers I don’t mind eating with food (although too much of any beer gives me the munchies).  And for some reason, I don’t get as hung over as some other beers.

  Anyway, I like beer.

Red Dog for me.

Has anyone had Old Chub(b)?

B24, if you’re into the English brews, might I suggest Boddingtons?  An ale vs. a stout, but so so good draught, and very good in a can.

Guinness, Sam Adams White Ale, Sam Adams Winter Ale, and Blue Moon.  That about does it for my beer list!

DUDE!  That is pretty much my top 4 list!  I'd probably just add Hoegaarden to round out the top 5.

Founders Breakfast Stout.  End of story!

I'll try it. I generally drink ales for everyday drinking (not that I drink everyday, but you get what i mean), but I will try any beer put in front of me. My friend has Beamish or Guinness on tap (usually Beamish cuz it's cheaper by the barrel), so I drink it often at his house. But I normally don't buy stouts for home use. Also, not a great "summer beer". More an evening/pub/dinner beer.

ICE, good choices.

I drink these as well. My wife will drink Blue Moon (she gets all giddy about having the little orange slice in it - she’s not much of a beer drinker!). I like any beer that I can get my wife to drink .

Boddingtons is good, but usually I turn people off of it.  Something about it being the “cream of Manchester” and brewed in Strangeways prison (or is that an urban legend)?

Aug 18, 2009 12:59 pm

My favorite is Chimay Blanche, a Trappist beer.

Aug 18, 2009 1:29 pm

Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar and Atwater Vanilla Java Porter. Two of the greatest beers to ever grace my pallette.

I like a good Newcastle too, easier to get a hold of.
Aug 18, 2009 2:26 pm

I never have understood the obsession with Blue Moon… I have never cared for it.

Am I a complete stroke for liking a nice cold Miller Lite ? LOL

Do you mean the beer choices, or the part about trying to get my wife drunk?

You're clearly just afraid the Commish will call you out if you stray!  [/quote]   LOL ! I also love the Coors commercials with the NFL coaches. I saw a new one with Herm Edwards last night. Classic.   This is just a great topic. B24 well done !

I have a neighbor from Michigan, he is big on the Blue Light. It is actually ok. Another neighbor swears by Red Stripe, I just swear at it. I do like Yuengling Ale.

Red Stripe??  .  Labbatt Blue and Molson Canadian (NOT the U.S. version of Molson) were my standbys.  My favorite was Rickards Red.
Aug 24, 2009 7:05 pm

Red Stripe is terrible and expensive…bad combo. Have you ever tried of the ciders? I got started on those on a trip to england…

Aug 24, 2009 7:34 pm

I can’t stomach hard ciders.  Just the thought of it makes me squirm.  I rank that up there with Egg Nog, Purple Passion, Wine Coolers, etc.  I basically drink beer and red wine, with the occasional vodka tonic.  I can take hard alcohol, but I don’t like all the fruity crap.

Huge fan of beer in general, but I love trying the regional beers as I travel.

If you ever make it to Kansas City area, try Boulevard Brewing Company's, Unfiltered Wheat.  One of the best production beers I've had.
Upstate NY and there is a great brew pub in Sacketts Harbor--all their beer is good.   D.C... The Capitol Brew Pub has a great selction.   And the list goes on...   My favorite, and expanding their market quickly, is Yeungleung.

Any of my former AGE brethren have fond memories of Schlafly’s Tap Room off of Olive in St. Louis? When it was too much to ask to choke down another wings n’ things supper at Syberg’s in the Hampton Inn during training, Schlafly’s provided a comforting alternative. Provided, of course, that you survived the 4 or 5 block hike across a blighted, industrial storage landscape to get there.

Was back a few years ago and popped in, and it was just as good as I remembered. Nice pub grub and an inspiring selection of craft brews from pale to eat-it-with-a-fork oatmeal stout.

I’m a big fan of Goose Island 312 (kind of a micro brew for the Chicago area) as well as Leine’s Summer Shandy, but if neither are available and I’m feelin like a girl I’ll drink Bud Lite Lime

That was one of the funniest things I've seen in a while. I had to read it twice to make sure that no serious person that wasn't a 17 year old girl really drinks that crap.

Me too. Ugly girl with a rocking body.

One of my best friends liked fat girls. Remember, he used to say, “Fat girls are like jungle gyms. They are fun to play on, but you don’t want one in your house”.
