U.S. government is a growth industry. ... Look at the FBI, or CIA, or Defense Department. .... If you don't mind travel, you could be a sales rep for an industry you like. ... If you are financially secure you could go back to school and pursue whatever interests you. .... Or you could figure out what you dislike about this job and not do that anymore. I'm pretty sure that after seven years experience, you could probably make a comfortable living working 30 hours a week with a $30 million book and get rid of all your unpleasant clients.

If you want to leverage your background, you might consider back office work at a broker/dealer - compliance, operations, etc.

If you want out of the industry altogether, you better just go see a career counselor.  This is not the best place for career advice.   What's your degree in?  Any experience before this industry?

Apparently “Community Organizer” is a lucrative career path. I’m sure you’re qualified.

How about an Insurance agent and don’t even dabble with securities.

Why are you "sick of the industry"?   What has changed for you?   What about your current position causes you the most stress?   Without the answers to questions like that, we are unable to give ADVICE, but just unsolicited comments.

What is it that you no longer like about the industry? Is it the people that you deal with? Is it the products? Is it the general state of the financial industry right now? Tell us, so you can get all the fine advice that the members of this forum can offer (lol).

If it is people - then weed out your “C” clients and make your “B” clients “A” clients. if it is the people around you, then change broker/dealers.

If it is the products, then change the products you use, try alternative investments, or whatever, I don’t know. Not working off a lot of info here.

If it is the industry (which is what I am expecting you are tired of), then just sit it out, wait a while, and it will eventually come back around to be something similar to what it was pre-2008. Perhaps you can take a break from work and focus on your family and hobbies for a while. Extended 4 week vacation or take a sabbatical or something like that to just reassess your current situation and see how you really feel about it all. Take a step back and look at it from a broader perspective.

If you are excited to start working again after taking a break, then right on. If you dread going back, then take an additional vacation or a leave of absence and figure out what else there is that you can do.

Obviously, all I have said has been very very vague, but I at least hope that you might be able to get something out of it.

See if you can get hired by Citibank. The way things are going, you will eventually be a government worker, and probably will have a pension.

JayMc, yes I am a chick (thank God), and don’t assume that just because I advise someone of something, that it is something that I am doing. I work my f’ing a** off everyday. I don’t mean Monday through Friday either. I work until midnight most nights, making calls and having meetings all day long, and finishing paperwork and following up on emails all night long.

Not only am I trying to do the very best by my clients and make sure that their investments don’t tumble out of the sky, but I am also a division manager doing my very best to help the reps that I supervise keep up with their clients, build their businesses, and stay on track. I’m also bringing on reps to my division on a regular basis, which means training, transitioning, and a huge amount of paperwork.

I am absolutely not complaining. I love what I do and I changed professions to do this. I could easily be earning a steady paycheck doing tax returns right now working the same or less hours. But I prefer to do this, and I am good at what I do.

My point is that YOU need to stfu. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, and right now, in this economy and world, your negativity is absolutely not needed. Unless you are trying to buy his business or steal his clients, then we should be supporting one another, considering that practically the entire world hates our kind currently. We have now been put in the same category as ambulance-chasing lawyers.

And for the record, I voted for McCain.

Obviously, when you referenced "rock heads," you were clearly talking about yourself!  Easily one of the most idiotic statements ever made on this board.  Hell, maybe on any board for that matter![/quote]   Ice, it's an Animal House reference.

Did you know that you cannot retire for at least 6 years after you decide to get out of this business?

Did you know that FINRA lists you as an employee?   Did you know that you fall under all guidelines and regulations of the IRS, FICA, and Department of Labor that qualifies you as an EMPLOYEE?   Did you know that we are the  only industry in the United States that allows employees to be sued for negligent or accidental acts?   Did you know that FINRA created their own regulatory body that supersedes the CIVIL Jurisdiction of this country?   Did you know that the statute of limitations of for any action is 5 to 6 years?   Did you know that your E & O policy is most likely a Claims Made Policy which means you have to keep your policy or a policy for at least 5 to 6 years after you retire?

Yawn … are you going to spam every thread with this tirade? If you get a W2 you are considered an employee. Big surprise, so what.

Mar 2, 2009 9:28 pm

I am finished.

When you wake up tommorrow who owns your book of business?  Your years of work... WHO OWNS THE BOOK.    If your comfortable with that answer then you deserve what you are getting whether it is 100% payout or 30%.   Then go back to pre 2000 and check it out.
Mar 2, 2009 10:52 pm

I’ve doubled my book and production in the last year. All the rest is white noise.

Mar 3, 2009 12:46 am

I have been through two moves.  and it is freeking nightmare.  And the paperwork is relentless, and the time it takes to move is consuming.  I guarantee that if you move your license to a new BD and your customer wants to  buy something during the move they have to wait until approved to move.   Now lets take selling Bank of America last week at 6.00 and in two days it went to 3.38.  a 50% loss in two days.  This is not an idle situation.  Because you put them in it at 6 before the move because you thought it was headed up and then it moved south.  during your move.  Your client calls you get me out.   YOU CANT.  They have to call the trade desk themselves.  There are BDs that will not take a trade from a customer.  Lets say by the time they call the next day it had dropped down to the 4s and they had bought a block of shares.  that is a major loss.   Worse yet what if they had done it when it was 36 October 08 and in 7 days it was in the m id 20s.  A big loss.  You have no control over your clients.  NONE NONE .

We could argue this all day long and I am calling it done.  All I have established is this.  We need to get ownership back..  YOU DO NOT OWN YOUR BOOK.    Give us our book back and the ability to move it in a free market society when ever we want.   There are many other reasons to do this and it has to do with the MADOFFS of the World and the BDs that are crooked that reps dont even know about. If your broker is having trouble but not bad enough to create a financial problem for FINRA to grant a financial move.  Then you are stuck until the last client is moved.  MOving a client is not a one day affair.  It has to be approved by the new broker dealer.    You need to be aware of what rights you do not have now.  If you dont care.  Then you get what you deserve.  Its like if you dont register you deserve what you get.   Our independence is being whitled away quickly.  Go back to 1999 until now.    Good luck in your business I wish you the best.
