Mutual Fund Screener

Jun 28, 2009 10:14 pm

I’m looking for a way to screen mutual funds by alpha, beta, style, Lipper and or Morningstar Ration, and other criteria. I’m looking for something that is reasonably priced, not something that will cost me thousands a year, like Principia Pro, etc.

  Any ideas, websites, etc?

Yahoo finance is fine. It’s funny though that it doesn’t rank funds when the 1,3,5 year numbers are negative. There are a lot of those out there right now.

Morningstar has a workstation that they provide to LPL reps at a cost. It is much less expensive than Principia. You can add the modules that you need, i.e. mutual funds, stocks, va’s…I like it pretty easy to use and certainly helps you screen mutual funds with your criteria.

The metrics really wouldn't matter as the process of achieving alpha, beta, etc is not replicable over varying time frames with mutual funds unless they are quant funds - which mostly suck.  Morningstar rating is also a useless screen, just ask them, it was never intended for use as most use it - which explains why most 5 star funds under perform benchmarks after they achieved the rating.  Presumably this would be the same with Lipper?

So this means all that is meaningful in a mutal fund screener are operations data (manager tenure, cost, minimum, availability, etc) - all of which is free at Yahoo.  Word of caution however, this is really of little value in a quantifiable way too.

Good luck and I hope you find what you're looking for.  FWIW - I use advisor workstation, but only to unsell the junk most prospects have in their portfolio and not as a mechanism of building portfolios to sell.  It seems to be very useful for this and definitely worth a few thousand/yr.
