A Little Contest-Deadline December 8th

Nov 29, 2005 1:50 am

OK, the end of the year is right around the corner. Time for a little contest. The quest? To predict where the Dow will end up or down for the year.

Now, to keep this fairly reasonable, no guesses will be permitted after December 8th. (Hey, it's my contest. Don't like it? Get your own!)

The winner will receive bragging rights for the next 12 months, a one owner 1987 Cadillac Brougham (impress your clients!), a guest shot on a Subway commercial (rub elbows with celebrities!), 100 scratch-off lottery tickets, and much much more!

So, get your calculators out and try to cipher what the Dow is going to close at, for the end of the year. 11,000? 7,000?

In case of a tie, the winners will be asked to hmmm...I haven't decided yet. Any suggestions?

I'm going to throw my hat in the ring with an up prediction. Do you need an exact number?

I also predict that the New York Stock Exchange will be closed on the First Monday of 2006.

Putting the money aside to cover the taxes on the Caddy! Does it have the padded coach roof, velvet interior and spoke rims?

C'mon guys or gals, the Dow "up or down" is not a valid guess. Let's see some numbers.

Doberman: Here's someone who knows their cars!! The answer is yes, yes, and yes! Plus, we had specially installed an 8-track tape player to give you some tunes to play on your way to client appointments. I promise you'll turn heads driving down the street!

Most of these cars came with an am/fm cassette with auto reverse. But an 8 track is cool. Maybe I can find the Iron Butterfly tape with the skip caused by running my father's 66 Lincoln off a 20 foot embankment and into a peach orchard. Of course as the car sailed thru the air we we playing the drum solo from IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA at maximum volume. The tape has a skip, the Lincoln was very totaled, and dad, once he knew we were OK, was very pissed. Go figure! He then got a new 69 Lincoln and helped me buy a 67 GTO convertible. That was a fun car! Big mistake selling that Goat.

Last word on the 66 Lincoln: The car was black and during the 2 1/2 years we owned it, it was invovled in 4 fender bender type accidents, none of which were my father's fault. Mom named the car The Black Mariah, which she said meant ill wind or bad luck. Maybe mom deservred more credit than we gave her. The car was totaled on Friday the 13th.

Dow 11,400.

Dec 1, 2005 4:50 am

Dow up 11,444

Dec 1, 2005 3:56 pm

I could care less about the "market" but I will take a shot just for fun and bragging rights.

Dow will print new high for 2005, but will come back to between into the range 10750 and 10850 due to continued pressure from interest rates and GM.

Dec 1, 2005 3:57 pm

Dow at 10,476

What do I win again?

That's a big range, 100 points? You make a good point on interest rates and GM. The market had a great day today. Dow closed at 10912.57 up 106.70 today. We could all use a few more days like this. Are we going to be seeing the NASDAQ hitting 3k anytime soon?

Dec 2, 2005 12:58 pm

Dow at 11000 by 15 Dec.

Unlicensed persons (who apparently frequent these boards offering advice) are urged to look away, lest you be tempted to earn vast amounts of money risk-free.]

Ok, everyone. I know you've all been waiting with baited breath. (What the h*ll is "baited" breath, anyway?) I've assembled my crack team of market prognosticators: Martha Stewart (has done time and speaks her mind), Cramer (just 'cause he's fun to watch), and Trump (needed someone to walk my dog). After considerable debate, we have predetermined the Dow close on the last business day of 2005 to be 11,427.

So, call your clients and leverage them to the hilt! Max out their credit cards, equity loans, and cash-out their life insurance. You've got a sure thing right here, my friend.

Calling tip: When calling your prospect/client with this valuable info, be sure to whisper into the phone, for greatest effect. The lower you whisper, the greater their attention. Tell them you've just received some hot market info from "one" of your sources and they need to come up with some substantial cash NOW. You can thank me, later.

Bated breath.....short for abated breath.  Means holding your breath in anticipation.

My prediction is already on file   Dow at 10,476

Dow?  Up...10,827.35

Tie breaker?  Score predictions for the BCS bowls.

-------------------------------------------------

CONGRATULATIONS!!! You won the "Annual Guess The Dow Contest" by coming the closest to the actual close. We will be forwarding you a plaque which you can proudly hang in your office. Also, feel free to put this accomplishment on your business card. Now, you're the envy of your co-workers and the toast of Wall Street! Again, congratulations!

Uhhh, I know I promised a car to the winner, but it's having a few mechanical problems... Right now, it's sitting on blocks in my front yard. You can ride by and I'll let you sit in it, for the time being. My regular mechanic is going thru detox, so it might be awhile before you can drive it away.

I'm also trying to get you a guest spot on WRNK's morning show, in the segment between "Your Prostate and You" and "Why Johnny Has Two Mommies". I had arranged to take you to the taping in a limo, but all they had left was a pick-up with an extended cab.

Well, it's not the prizes that make the goal worthwhile, it's the good feeling you get from a job well done, right?

Dec 31, 2005 2:19 am

Check your results or have them audited, because I said 10750-10850.

Final print was 10,717. But hey, with prizes like that, don’t bother.

Hmmmm...

Compliance won't allow me to put this on my business card (I asked).

I keep all of my awards and plaques in a foot locker in the garage.

My co-workers are already drunk off their asses.

I don't need another car but I can always park this one in my front yard (just like the neighbors).

I've always been told that I have the perfect face for radio.

As long as the pickup is a Dodge...I'll be just fine (I hate Ford and Chevy).

Thanks to all the little people that made this award a reality.  I'll be back next year.

Our judges disqualified your entry because we were looking for a specific number, not a range of numbers. But as a consolation prize, we will be sending you the board game "Google-opoly". Thanks for playing "Guess The Dow"! And now, a word from our sponsor...
