EJ pros/cons

Jan 15, 2007 5:13 am

Would those of you who have been with Jones please summarize both the advantages and disadvantages of going with them?

My impression of EJ prior to reading these threads was that they have a very good reputation, they are ranked very high in customer satisfaction as well as IR satisfaction.  These forums give me the opposite impression- it seems there are more Jones "bashers" here than anything else.

Thanks.

Look up and to the right...the search button is your friend!

This sounds like an assignment for a high school term paper....."Summarize the advantages and disadvantages....."

acktucker,

You need to search out the answers to this question.  There are many of us here that used to be with Jones (you figure it out...used to be with Jones), so that tells me that Jones is not a bad place to start.  Not a bad place to start but probably not the place to stay if you don't want to starve.  You'll find that Jones is good at building offices through attrition.  That is, they hire me and I come in and work for a few years and build up the assets, then I leave and they promise a good office to the next guy (even though I take half the clients with me when I leave).  This new guy comes in and is disappointed that so many of the assets have left, but keeps working anyway.  Eventually he gags on the koolaid and he leaves and the cycle continues.  There are some positive posts about Jones, but if you don't want to support the multi-million dollar habits of the general partners, naybe you should look elsewhere.

No....seriously...use the search button and read some of the older threads about the good and bad on EDJ.  It's not that we don't WANT to answer questions or give advice..it' just that this topic has been beaten to death.

After doing the searching and reading, then if you have some specific questions, like the door knocking one, we would be happy to help.  Speaking generally for myself....that is.

Got it…thanks.

Exactly.  He has the right to ask the question, but it has been asked over and over.   We have the right to point out that he is asking a popular and frequently addressed question without taking two minutes to use the 'search' function.

understood.

Peace to all as we fight terror.

Dear ACK,

I was at Jones for 8 years.  It was a great place to start.  I built my business.  I was very successful.  I went on every diversification trip.  My wife and I travelled the world.

Cons-Poor Product Offering

Meeting after Meeting after Meeting.  It became very apparent that Jones caters to the mediocore broker.  If you want to be a champion and strive to high levels Jones is not the place to do it.  If you are newbie, you will receive a lot of attention.  If you are an underperforming broker, you will receive a lot of attention.  If you are very successful, you will feel like you are losing clients to competitors because you will not have the arrows in your quiver to compete.

Then if you've drank the kool-aid long enough you will start to listen to all the stories about how great the LP is and how if you leave only 50% of the book stays (I transferred 92% in the first year).

The advice I can give you is to have a plan.  If you go with Jones realize that when you become successful it's time to leave.

This is the biggie, between the weak selection of "preferred funds" and lack of fee based platform, a capable IR is going to outgrow what EDJ can offer clients.

What seems like too many meetings, can also be interpreted as mentorship. EDJ makes sure people have structure and method. Arguably alot better than the sink-or-swim at the wirehouses.

Exactly, although who knows, you may find EDJ to be exactly the right fit for you.

If you listen to the people posting here and make your decisions from their posts, you need to reconsider your source information.

I have been with Jones a while and I make six figures working fewer than 5 days a week. Yea, Jones really sucks...LOL

Listen, it doesn't matter what type of technology you use, what funds you have available, what payout you have etc... It comes down to you and how hard you want to work at the beginning to get your business off of the ground. I run my own office and set my own hours and I have never in my career received a phone call from St. Louis about anything. They really let you do your thing.

Jones has made me very wealthy.

'nuff said!

There is a new EJ forum if you would like to be a part of it please email me and I'll give you the link. [email protected]

Perhaps your hard work has made you wealthy, but Jones has not made you wealthy.  This is a typical kool aid drinker attitude.

oldgut, I mean oldguy,

How long did it take you to reach that heralded six figure mark?  At my last glance, before I left, the guys at the summer regional being recognized for first time $100,000 net had been at it for 8 - 10 years depending on how hard they had worked. (yes, ocassionally someone would do it sooner) Not quite the timeframe EDJ gives you when you are in the hiring process.

That last post of yours was a jewel old guy.  Did you forget to put any comments in or were you just speechless to hear that not everyone cares as much for EDJ as you do.  I'm happy that you're happy now. Just give yourself some time.  You still didn't answer the question about how long it took you to make the six figure mark. Or are you just avoiding it because in reality even though Jones told you that you made 100K you didn't quite take home that much?!

Still speechless?
