Dealing with unethical relatives/clients
I’m learning that when you work hard to expose yourself to many people in our line of work, just how many shady and unethical people you find out there.
I recently loss my first client to kidney failure. She was 72 years old. Her 3 children are now battling it out over her estate, two of which have not spoken to her in years. It blows my mind to see how far others are willing to prey on those that can not defend themselves.
The worst is when a person who is incapable of taking care of themself is taken advantage of. I have a client, old, senile, unaware of what’s happening around him. Has a son-in-law working his ass off to get him to sign a POA so the son can liquidate dad’s assets and run with it. Went so far to write letters on dad’s behalf asking that we listen to what he(son-in-law) asks of us. I had compliance and our attorney’s contact his local court so we can freeze his accounts and put out an arrest for identity theft. A nightmare situation.
Brutal. Just very disappointed in people sometimes.
Anyone have any stories? How do you deal with unethical people? Keeps me up at night but that’s due to immaturity and not very many experiences with this sort of stuff.
Oh…I feel for you. I have a 87 year old lady…still in great shape. A decendant of a founder of a large midwestern company we’ve all heard of. SHe has a son and daughter who continually ask her for money. 3k to pay doctor bills, 5k to have basement leak fixed etc. I would think eventually you would run out of ideas. Because of the assets in the family trust, they both have Masters degree paid by the trust, they’re both in their 50’s and the daughter has never, ever, had a job. She is in here 2 -3 times per week with a new sad story and a need for money to be sent. I want to tell her …“your kids are losers”.
Called the STL county cops on two brothers and a sister when mom died in 2002. Had to get them of the lot of my EDJ office...ugly. My BOA was an old battle axe though and wanted to take care of business herself. I could write a book on that situation...hillarious
