Charities

Does anyone belong/participate/volunteer to a charity? I've been thinking about volunteering. Not that I care (I do, deep deep deep down) but more than anything as a way to meet prospects. Obviously I wouldn't whore around slinging out business cards, but I'd think that you'd be exposed to some influential members of the community and at the very least, get some decent exposure without having to push the issue.

Anyhow, I can't think of a particular topic that moves me enough. Breast cancer (or any cancer) is something that intrigues me.

While I was typing this, I found this website: http://www.charitywatch.org/toprated.html

After looking at all the links, I have an even more difficult time of deciding which, if any.

Do you guys participate in any NFP charities?

I’m involved in one national organization.  This is my first year and have only been involved for a few weeks now.  I expect it to be a slow go and am not actively seeking clients, just letting the process take me.  I can tell you I am in front of wealth I have not been able to get in front of previously.

Is the level of your activity discretionary? How much time do you estimate, per week you spend with/on the charity?

I've been thinking of volunteering for a political campaign considering the presidential elections are next year, unfortunately I'm not crazy about either sides canidates.

DAMM is a good one - Drunks Against Mad Mothers!

More seriously, participate in a charity because you want to, have a passion for it, etc. Clients will come out of that as people get to know you, what you stand for, and as you build a network within the organization.

My activity is up to my discretion.  Just like work I put in as much as I want out of it, which is everything I can.  At this point I am spending probably five hours a week on it.  Considering I am working 70 hours that is acceptable to me.  Our big fundraising event is in the early fall, so I expect things to slow down after that.

Rather than looking at National Charities, why don't you see what local organizations and foundations in your community need help.  You don't have to be on the board but I'm sure that any participation from you would be appreciated and noted by the people who are the movers and shakers in your community.   Don't do it because you want contacts.  That will become apparent to others and you will get no business from them. You need to do it because you feel for the cause.

I am one of the founders and on the board of a non profit trust for community economic and infrastructure redevelopment that creates and administers grants for those types of projects.  I strongly support another local non profit library foundation (we have no public library in our town) that was founded by some very (!!!!) wealthy members, because I have a passion for reading and value their work.

Other local charitable organizations you should look into are Rotary Club, Lions (they are always looking for younger members) and any youth related foundations or support groups.  Chamber of Commerce, while not a charity is also a valuable place to donate your time. You will be much more appreciated there than if you donated your time to United Way.
