Officially signed up for the march CFP exam. Wondering if there are any words of wisdom from others who have passed the exam? I have the work experiance already, and I have already obtained my FINRA licenses (for whatever thats worth). Now im doing the Ken Zahn program and wondering if I should just read through the material or if there is a particular part I should focus on? HELP?!?!

I went to school for financial planning and have been an adviser for going on 4 years. I can take the exam anytime, but I don’t know if there is a need to. I work for a Broker Dealer, I collect a fee and get commissions on certain products. I was initially hired as a financial planning consultant but I hate doing financial plans, I am driven more to get clients and bring them into my advisory business. The problem that I have with Financial Planning is that I can call myself a Financial Planner, I just cant say or put that I am Certified. Does a client really care or notice? I haven’t noticed if they really care. I know a couple of advisers that work for other BD’s and are CFP’s and the majority of their business isn’t doing financial plans. Being a CFP does add some valor to your standings, but I haven’t noticed any drop in clients being interested in my services. In my opinion it is a distinguished membership. You pay thousands of dollars to take the exam and you have an annual fee to stay member. If you are required by your company to take it, then I feel for you. It is a tough booger. I find myself studying for certification exams more than actually working with clients. Either way good luck if you are studying for the CFP. I don’t know if I ever want to travel down that road.

depends on the type of client youre working with… my partner and i are working with high net worth doctor clients who absolutely do care.

For me the hardest parts were investments and retirement. Lots of nuances that you need to study.

That said, I studied my ass off and passed.

Good luck. It’s really the best title for anyone in huge field to have.
