Whats the best cold calling script you ever used? Calling business owners. Based on results, not fun.

2nd question - whats your technique in getting past the gatekeeper.

Morning!  This is BerkshireBull from Big Mutual Insurance Co here in town, is this a convenient time for you to talk for a minute and a half?

No/busy:  No problem, when’s a better time to reach you tomorrow?

yes/what’s this about?  Proceed

The reason I’m calling is we see you have a special birthday coming up, are you getting a lot of stuff in the mail?

yes/not really

Haha, well get ready because as you get closer you’ll get a lot more!

We specialize in helping people choose a Medicare Plan.  The way we do that is by getting a copy of the Wisconsin Guide to Medicare in their hands. It’s a book put out by the State of Wisconsin that explains how Medicare works and what you can expect.  That takes about 15 minutes to go through and you can keep the book.  Then if you have an extra 10 minutes we can go through the specifics of all the plans you will have available to you, both the 3 plans we offer, and the plans we do not.

I’m going to be coming through your neck of the woods on Tuesday at 9:30 on my way to a couple appointments I have up in __________.  Would you be around if I stopped for 25mins and dropped off that Guide?  Otherwise I could catch you at 1:30 on my way back through heading home if that would work better.

I"ve tried many scripts over the past years with business owners and found either a fixed income product pitch or a general retirement planning call to be most helpful. The biggest drawback I face with the general retirement call is a lot of times the business owners assume I only work with company plans. This is not a huge issue and opens some doors for conversation.

As for the gatekeeper, be honest with them. If they won’t put you through to the business owner when you are honest nothing good is going to come out of the call from misleading them to get through. If the gate keeper ask my name I always tell them my name and firm (I work for a Wirehouse so no hiding why I’m calling) and ask again if the business owner is available.
