Strange Meeting with referral

Jul 16, 2009 2:05 pm

I was given a referral to  a husband and wife who recently sold a business.   Wife also sells RE on the side and is appearantanly quite good, even in this market.

I call and speak to the wife, who is very non comital, but says she will mention it to her husband.   Husband calls back serveral hours later and sounds extremely happy to talk and then meet with me.   Husband arrives at the meeting and announces that he wants to hear about the best investment I have.  I tell him that before I will mention a product, I need to ask him some questions to find out about his background, goals other investments etc.   I ask my questions.   Then he says he has something to show me-   A Pyramid Scheme centered around a new type of search engine / Craigs List competitor !   He brags about making $16k from a $1k investment and then says there are only a few slots available in the next flight of investment.   I politely ask a few questions and quickly realize that he doesn't even know the details of what he is involved in.   Then he asks about my relationship with God !   And proceeds to try to convert me !   After about 10min of listening, I finally stand up and tell him he has given me alot to think about.   Waste of 1hr....

It's not.  Borker is just a bitter little booger.  I can recruit all day long, and yes, it gets me "brownie points" for limited partnership offerings, but I choose to spend my time building my business.  Other than that, I derive no benefit from other advisors whatsoever, other than profit sharing and profit bonuses (and this is based on profit of my office and the company overall).  Lets not forget, at many wirehouse firms, you actually get CASH in your pocket for recruiting transfer brokers.  I know my friend at Merrill said he  made like 75K one year on recruiting some transfer brokers.  Not sure if that policy still exists, but at one time it did.

To be honest, I just don’t operate that way. The only people I would recruit are transfer brokers with books, or someone that would be appropriate to take over an existing office with assets. I would never recruit anyone “new” into this business - at any firm - I don’t want to feel responsible for their futures. This business is too tough.

Even so, that does not relate at all to a “pyramid scheme”. It’s just an incentive. A pyramid scheme would be more like everyone that I hire, I get a cut of their future earnings.

Spaceman. It’s actually a well done documentary. He talks about all religions and how they are the same thing. He actually interviews pastors, priests and other religious folks and makes his determinations that way. I really enjoyed the movie.

Jul 17, 2009 8:03 pm

It was actually very well done and not as biased as I initially thought going in.  It was basically Bill going from religion to religion asking for someone high up within that religions church to prove that their “god” actually exists and what, other than faith and whatever Bible that religion uses, do they have to base their beliefs on.  Not surprisingly, no one was able to provide any acceptable reasoning other than what their Good Book says and blind faith.  I just checked up and its the 7th highest grossing documentary of all time.  So yes, it actually was a pretty big hit, Spiff.

Jul 17, 2009 8:58 pm

Bill Maher is a man with an agenda, he went into the filming of this movie with an agenda, it is in no way shape or form an un-biased documentary.  If Sean Hannity had made this movie the outcome would have been different … both men with agendas.

I personaly don’t watch hack jobs like Hannity, Maher, Moore, or Gore … they each have something to sell me and I’m not buying it.

Rush is god though and the only true religion is Yankee Baseball and the NFL.

Jul 17, 2009 9:07 pm

Douche - I mean Volt - Everyone has an agenda, for everything they do. His agenda = Make a documentary on why or why not religion is real" He documented it, and his questions weren’t answered. Just like you have an agenda every morning watch Opra and eat Bon-Bons.

Not to take sides, but I'm skeptical.  I took a philosophy of religion course in college and we had to cover the different philosophical arguements about the existance of God, and none of them relied on the book.

Thats his whole motive in this movie. To find the truth in religion without relying on answers from any book that was written by man. His conclusion…No proof exists.
Jul 17, 2009 9:25 pm

…and you watched a movie to learn that proof does not exist of god?  Those with faith don’t need proof, those without faith don’t need to watch a movie to know their is no physical proof. So, in the end he proved what we all figured out when we were 12 years old? You are an idiot windy.

Jul 17, 2009 10:03 pm

No but there are other scientific facts that support Pangea. Not just a book written by people, saying it was there. There are fossils, geographical evidence, evidence of the polar ice cap once being a part of other continents, continental plates, and not to mention visual proof in mountains, volcanoes and underwater plates. The earths plates move during every earthquake, volcanic eruption, and everytime Opra jumps. It’s visual and now, no camera necessary.

I politely ask a few questions and quickly realize that he doesn’t even know the details of what he is involved in.

Then he asks about my relationship with God ! And proceeds to try to convert me ! After about 10min of listening, I finally stand up and tell him he has given me alot to think about.

Waste of 1hr…
No but there are other scientific facts that support Pangea. Not just a book written by people, saying it was there. There are fossils, geographical evidence, evidence of the polar ice cap once being a part of other continents, continental plates, and not to mention visual proof in mountains, volcanoes and underwater plates. The earths plates move during every earthquake, volcanic eruption, and everytime Opra jumps. It’s visual and now, no camera necessary.
Actually, there are plenty of historical facts that loosely corroborate the narrative written into the book (at least the NT and parts of the OT), arguably more than a majority of other religions.

With that being said, all faith is a non-rational exercise. Trying to objectively prove or disprove it is pointless.

Oh, and windy, it’s ‘Oprah’…
