Say it Ain't so Jonesies

Feb 27, 2009 11:05 pm

I’m sorry. I can’t help this one.

I had a lady call yesterday, wanting some advice on basic financial planning and budgeting. My office was the fifth place she called. She called three Jones reps and an Indy.

I did not think she had much in assets, but I thought I’d listen to her because she sounded frantic. She said, “My husband is self-employed and we just found out we owe $30k in taxes. We need help!”.

I made some time today for her to come in, waiving my consult fee because her husband is a veteran. We sat down, went through the questionnaire and found out that between the two of them, they had $600k in various old 401ks.

When were halfway through I showed gave her the new brochure I developed about “Is your financial expert an advisor or broker?” and she asked if that was what Edward Jones was - a broker. I told her yes and that I used to work there.

Here is the tough part for me to understand. This lady called three Jones offices and was rushed off of the phone when she told them she needed budgeting advice and some business planning. And one of them told her, “Why don’t you send Clark Howard an email?”.

WTF is going on with you guys!? I would never expect a Jones broker to turn away someone in need. And if they had dug a little deeper, they would have found that it would be worth their while.

The Indy guy doesn’t have an excuse either, but that could have been a fluke. But THREE Jones guys?

LOL…geez your all over the place…when do you find time for clients?!?  She called 3 jones FAs out of 12,000 and we all must be that way…but the one Indy must’ve been a fluke…LMAO…It’s killing me but i’m starting to like you!

It's "you're", a contraction for "you are". Not "your". And the "I" in the word "i'm" [sic] should be capitalized.

Where did you say that you were educated? Maybe you can get your money back.

I haven’t seen a Philo post in quite some time… Welcome back…

Moraen- I am curious what does your brochure say the differences are? Are you RIA?
Feb 28, 2009 2:21 am

Hiya Squash! How’ve you been keeping? Staying busy?

Feb 28, 2009 2:22 am

I dunno… helping someone out with setting up a SEP IRA is one thing, but budgeting is a bit more labor intensive than I want to do. I have one client (charity case) that I’ve done that with, but it sure is a pain in the a** and boring.

The worst part is that it seems that as soon as you get something sensible figured out, they call and tell you that they 'need' $10K to go on a cruise.

For every person who wants basic financial planning and budgeting advice and turns out to have $600,000 to invest, there are probably 100 who simply want basic financial planning and budgeting advice.  It makes sense to play the percentages.  Sometimes a good one slips through the cracks.  It's better to let some slip through the cracks than to spend time meeting with everybody who calls.    (That being said, in my practice, I'll meet with anyone who calls, but that is simply because I know I can make a decent buck with insurance also.)

So true. My favorite story is a guy (about 40) who had lost his job, and he had a 401k worth about $30,000.  I decide to help the guy, and we open an IRA and do the rollover call. After about two weeks I call the guy to see if he's received the check yet. He says "Yeah, they called me at home to confirm some information, and I decided to not roll it over. I had them send me the cash and I bought a fishing boat."  I almost laughed over the phone.  He had no idea how expensive that fishing boat actually was.

Clear on that, kid?

Good.

I'm sure you're well aware that poor spelling or grammar a stupid person does not make. There are myriad incarnations of wisdom. A superb grasp of the English language is but one. Precision and industriousness certainly have value, but I also admire humility and respect. Lead by example rather than cynicism and criticism, and you may find your message more well received. Pull a dog on a taut leash and it pulls back incessantly; lead it gently, and it will follow you anywhere.   And, no, I didn't just call Kool Aid a dog.

Yes, I’m an RIA - It basically talks about compensation and how I am compensated vs. brokers

HKA - I am all over the place. I am sorry that she had to call three Jones brokers, but really when she told them her priority wasn’t consolidating her old 401ks, they didn’t have time for her.

I'm with you. In my previous professional life, I was the a-hole boss that sent replies to my employees telling them to rewrite their emails to me in some semblance of english if they wanted me to read them. It's your native language, and probably the only one you speak, so at least do it properly.   It is fair to point out, however, that the first three sentences in your grammar correction were incomplete.

You also use way too many commas.  I used to get nailed for that in my college papers.   I don't even pretend to try anymore.  However, I am a stickler for only using three periods...not four or five like some folks.

is this a jones’ thread?  if so, glad i don’t work there. you, especially phil the grammer freak are losers…

Mar 6, 2009 5:44 am

When someone calls in and says they need budgeting help, doesn’t anyone ask questions on the phone and get an idea if they have any assets? Wasn’t one of the first things we learned in Prospecting 101 was try and qualify your prospects as best you can before proceeding? This seems like a no-brainer to me and would have uncovered some of those assets on the phone, thus wasting nobody’s time.

Oh, wait, are we still talking about this, or on we on dogs? Or grammar?

This coming from the man who doesn't understand what that key marked SHIFT does.  And that you can't substitute a period with an ellipse.  It's a good thing there weren't any spelling or punctuation questions on the S7.
