Retired CFP? There’s a New Program for You

The new CFP Board Emeritus program is not a certification, but rather a way for those who are no longer practicing to stay involved with the profession.

The CFP Board has introduced a new program designed to help former CFP holders stay connected and involved with the financial planning profession. The CFP Board Emeritus program is set to launch in January, and will be open to former CFP professionals who meet the program’s criteria.

Folks who decide to join the program must attest that they are no longer using the CFP mark in a public or private setting and no longer practice financial planning. Folks who are eligible must have held their CFP mark for 25 years or more; must complete the CFP Emeritus Ethics Declaration; and pay a $95 annual fee. Former practitioners can check their eligibility for the program by signing onto their CFP Board account.

In exchange, program participants receive regular updates from the CFP Board and its Center for Financial Planning, access to volunteer opportunities and a CFP Board Emeritus Card. The program recognizes former CFPs’ long-standing service to the profession, the CFP Board says.

“This program will allow those of us who aren’t practicing to continue our relationship with CFP Board,” said Ben Coombs, who earned his CFP in 1973. “We will be able to volunteer, have open communications, and stay involved in the profession.”
