Olympian Has Eyes on CFP

Silver medalist Chris Mazdzer is studying to become a CFP, Cetera reorganizes its B/Ds and T. Rowe Price to offer the full Financial Engines suite.

Olympic silver medalist Chris Mazdzer, the first American man to ever win a luge medal, is already thinking past the Winter Games. Mazdzer is studying to become a certified financial planner with plans to sit for the exam this fall. The luger, 29, already has a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in finance from DeVry University. He told CNBC that all his years of traveling on the luge circuit made him disciplined about his schooling and his finances. He plans to combine financial planning with life coaching to help clients—executives and athletes—achieve their goals and give back. But he’s not quite done with luge yet. Mazdzer hopes to compete in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

As part of the reorganization, the firm also made some leadership changes, including the promotion of Catherine Bonneau, CEO of Cetera Financial Institutions, moves to chief operating officer of Cetera Financial Group. Tim Stinson, national sales manager, wealth management, will serve in the newly created role of head of wealth management. First Allied President Kevin Keefe and Cetera Advisors President Erinn Ford have left the firm. Mimi Bock, most recently executive vice president of national sales and consulting at LPL, is now president of Cetera Advisors and First Allied. Ford, who wanted to permanently relocate to Seattle, has joined Seattle-based KMS Financial Services, a subsidiary of Ladenburg Thalmann, as president. Cetera’s COO David Ballard is also leaving.
