13TH Annual Superior Achievement in Design and Imaging (SADI) Awards Recognizes the 2002 Leaders in Retail Innovation

Atlanta, Georgia – April 18, 2002 – PRIMEDIA’s Shopping Center World magazine, the source of information for retail real estate executives, announced the winners of the 13th Annual Superior Achievement in Design and Imaging (SADI) awards, which recognize the retail industry’s leaders in design and architectural innovation. The 2002 award winners were honored last night with a special presentation at the Fairmont Hotel in Chicago.

“The winners for this year are true leaders in the field of architectural design, and they all exemplify some of the most unique and exciting trends emerging from the retail industry,” said Ben Johnson, editor-in-chief of PRIMEDIA’s Shopping Center World. “And, to better reflect the SADI mantra, we limited this year’s panel of judges to architects only. We feel this gives us the purest design competition possible, with architects judging the best designs from around the world on their truest merits.”

Eligible entrants for the SADI Awards included any architectural or design firm, retailer or developer responsible for the design of a new or renovated retail store, shopping center or restaurant. Entries were judged and scored based on construction problem-solving, general aesthetics, image building and implementation. A listing of this year’s categories, SADI winners and their respective projects includes the following:

  • ‘New Retail Store’ (less than 5,000 sq. ft.) – Eight Inc. of San Francisco, CA for Apple Computer
  • ‘New Retail Store’ (5,000 sq. ft or more) – Callison Architecture of Seattle, WA for NIKE Goddess
  • ‘New Centers’ (less than 400,000 sq. ft.) – Tie Between - Elkus/Manfredi Architects of Boston, MA for Downtown Disney; Callison Architecture of Seattle, WA for Flatiron Village
  • ‘New Centers’ (400,000 sq. ft. – 1 million sq. ft.) – RTKL of Baltimore, MD for the Printworks
  • ‘New Centers’ (more than 1 million sq. ft.) – Elkus/Manfredi Architects of Boston, MA for CityPlace
  • ‘New Restaurants’- Engstrom Design Group of San Rafael, CA for Nordstrom Cafe
  • ‘Renovated Retail Stores’ – Little & Associates Architects of Charlotte, NC for Harris Teeter
  • ‘Renovated Centers’ – Callison Architecture of Seattle, WA for Beverly Center

In addition, for the first time, one SADI winner was selected to receive the Grand SADI, a special award recognizing the best overall design in the 2002 competition.

“We introduced the Grand SADI Award this year to recognize the one project receiving the most total votes from our esteemed panel of judges,” said Johnson. “On that score, NIKE Goddess by Callison Architecture, was far and away the most impressive project entered this year.”
