EDJ is not the same company it was when I joined. Now the GPs are all “yes” men/women who would be hard pressed to formulate an original thought. Sad. Meanwhile we longer term vets are subsidizing many thousands of 200k (or less) producers…and the great CA & UK debacles.

Inthecult:

EDJ is not the same company it was when I joined. Now the GPs are all “yes” men/women who would be hard pressed to formulate an original thought. Sad. Meanwhile we longer term vets are subsidizing many thousands of 200k (or less) producers…and the great CA & UK debacles.

I'll share with you something from my RL, regarding his concerns. Production in our region is ... less than acceptable, and oddly particularly so as you go out in years.   His comments were that senior FAs basically snubbed their noses at him when it came to increasing productivity with impunity. They already had achieved a status where they could dictate to the company if they were willing to work harder than what it took to create $200K ... being happy to make that $80000 paycheck after ten years in this business.   Production - and particularly continually increasing one's production - is not rewarded in this company, and like everything else in the world, you get what you pay for (or reward).  I liberally use the phrase, reap as you have sown and EDJ needs to look at where their seeds go.   Worse yet, on an informal basis at corporate gatherings what we reinforce is lifestyle (Fred works three days a week! Lucky guy!!!) over production (Fred's driving a new Porsche! I wonder what he's doing).   Maybe this is not the company that hired you. But it certainly is the company that hired me.   You want change? Forget about the UK. Stop giving out Div trips to like 4000 advisors unless the FA's increased production, YoY of at least 10% (with some combination of higher production levels than $18K per month). Watch your world change then. *   * sorry to get all worked up.

Locked-

You or your RL are illustrating some of the Jones model flaws. At 80K net, you are left alone to do whatever you want. During these turbulent times and revenues are down, Jones needs this segment to step it up as well as the vets.   The expansion model can't continue if you are losing money in the UK and especially Canada let alone the 200 newbies per month in the US that won't cover their expenses for at least 2 years. I have said it many times, if the GP gravy train ends eveything is up for grabs. Trips, bonuses, LP...

10. They made Segment 4, but decided they could build a better mousetrap

9. The BOA could not tie her shoes and kept bringing in her dog when the FA wasn’t there.

8. LP wasn’t worth it to them.

7. Other places didn’t have green screens

6. They got pissed because Jones took 61% AND didn’t pay for their health premiums

5. Being told that not going to regional meetings "could be bad for you, and we’re watching you"

4. The office is in a strip mall next to Papa Johns

3. EDJ put five newbies and 2 transfer brokers ALL within 1.7 miles of their office (I was in a bigger municipality before).

2. The RL grabbed their wife’s ass

1. They would rather spend the money on their own vacation than hang out with a bunch of kool-aid drinking Jonesies.

That sh!ts funny right there, I don’t care who you are!

Sep 12, 2009 6:19 pm

You make some very good points…and I understand why you might get worked up!  You made an interesting observation re the culture at gatherings that seems to encourage mediocrity vs superior performance…  Now what might be the motivation of the GPs to encourage a culture of 200k-300k (gross, of course) producers???  (I have some thoughts of my own about this, but I am sincerely asking for your input)

The issue that I think is critical to EJ is to take a long, HONEST look at the UK and Canada.  Both of these endeavors have been giant money drains on the partnership/partners.  When is enough failure enough?  To make matters worse, when hearing the updates from Weddle & Reamy, you might think both countries are at or very near true break even.  The harsh reality is, both countries are losing money at an astonishing pace, and will be for many, many years.  My feeling is that the higher up GPs are in a state of denial about the UK and Canada.  Further complicating the matter is that the people who are being made GP (I mean in the home offices) are the EDJ version of the Stepford wives (without the personality).  GPs are hired to follow, not to lead or ask questions...."Yes Jim!"  "Sure Jim!"  "What a great idea, I am so glad you thought of it, Jim!!" is what you will hear from the Kitchen Cabinet and the like. Oh well, a kabillion chineese people likely don't give a darn.......I am off to go golfing!

  10. They made segment 4, only to see their "branch allocation" spike on their P&L 9.   Their BOA was a paid spy, and her word was better than theirs 8.   They got LP (twice), and found out it wasn't all that it was cracked up to be 7.   They could never figure out why the guy who gave them green screens was making       $5-10 million dollars a year 6.   They got piised off when they had to paint their office that disgusting shade of green 5.   Having the RL let you know that he was watching your every keystroke, and knew       when you logged on and off your system was a little creep to them 4.   They had crappy office space, but would get their own P&L killed to move 3.   They put in 5 failing transfer brokers (none of whom brought any real assets), and then       poured all their resources into helping them succeed.  They all failed anyway. 2.   The RL's wife was constantly trying to get on my Johnson; not that hot, and too many       plastic pieces and parts 1.   Being told how to behave like a 13-year-old while on a Diversification Trip.  Oh, and       then there's those pesky taxes, too.

I guess this backfired on Volt.  Another young pup who can’t think for himself, thinking Jones is the “bomb”.  Sad…very sad.  Good luck and good selling.

Sep 12, 2009 7:15 pm

To make an analogy to help Volt.  IMHO, EDJ’s experience is similiar to the first time you get laid.  You think you’ve hit the jackpot.  You brag to your friends about your new love.  Everytime after that it gets just a little less like a jackpot and more like a 1$ slot, and you find out all your friends have played the 1$ slot and move on.  Then…you go to college and all of a sudden your surrounded by the most luscious SEC girls…

What might be the motivation of the GPs to encourage lesser production?

The knee-jerk reaction might be to create a moat around them, but honestly I find that too simplistic and not a real reflection of the 5’s I’ve known. I’ve enjoyed enough K-aide to believe the rap about others wanting me to succeed, so I suppose I’m a fool.

Again - they’d like to see their lesser brethren (the slacking 4s, barely there 3s) produce more. But what have they been given incentives to do? Goodknight. Legacy. Bring in new blood. Do they have any incentive to prod 4s/3s? I don’t believe so. And, from what I see, the one shining success is the production of new blood - people like Volt and Windy on this board, and the newbies in my own region. Reap as you have sown.

Jim’s star continues to rise. Good-looking, youngish, charismatic and well-spoken CEO’s have a centrifugal force that’s hard to deny and impossible when they’ve had any sort of successes. Given his predecessor, Jim Weddle looks like Jack Welch and those successes are multiplying. I believe our “International” components will never go away while Jim’s in place.

I’m getting a little drunk (swilling vodka over some aching teeth), so I better stop writing now. BTW … nice day for golf (in my area, anyways).

Sep 13, 2009 7:18 pm

To be honest, I don’t think Weddle sees Canada and UK the same way as the “previous administrations”.  Weddle’s communications have taken a remarkabley different tone lately, and he is basically tired of the mediocrity.  However, you don’t just wake up one mornning and hsut down your international operations.  That would be shortsighted.  MY guess is that they either (a) make an acquisition in those countries to beef up the # of FA’s (not likely), (b) wake up one monring and shut down the operations (not likely), or © paint enough lipstick on those two pigs so they can sell them for SOME value to another firm (most likely).  But Weddle has done a lot in three years, but you can only tackle so much at once.  And in the middle of his three years, got saddled with the worst recession in 75 years.  I have faith that CDA and UK are the topic of HEAVY debate in the Oval Office of STL.

Weddle is a good executive that doesn't believe anything is a "sacred cow" in this company (except maybe the partnership structure and one-man offices).  He is making good moves, and I trust he will do the same for International, though it may take some time.

[/quote]   Let's see, breakfast with the in-laws, wife, kids, and cousin who just bought a motorcycle.  Trip to the pet store where I bought some live crickets to feed to my new office pet snake I lovingly named footsoldier.  Ha, just kidding.  I really named him spears.  Yard to mow, TV to watch, local festival to attend with wife, kids, sister and her husband.  That was Saturday.  Church, nap, more yard to mow, dinner, get kids ready for bed, read a book, watch some TV.  Sunday wasn't as busy of a day as Saturday, but still no time to concern myself with the non-stop all things EDJ are bad conversations here.      So, while I was out living my life, not thinking at all about EDJ or RegReps, you were sitting in front of your computer pounding out some meaninless dribble that I can only imagine comes from a damaged psyche that I'm sure you attribute to your years spent with EDJ.  Pitiful.

I am guessing that you have never been to the Grove at Ole Miss. #1 by far the fact that you mention Georgia and Florida indicates to me that you haven't been to the Grove....... It's not even close.....
