Ok for a guy looking at going Indy soon that has been swamped trying to read these boards and looking at all sorts of different sofware, any Indys care to share their most essential programs?  Just trying to hear from some folks that have “been there and done that” and have a few programs that really help with either client contact, financial planning, asset allocation, etc.

  Thanks!

Act! is very reasonable and does a fine job for contact management.  For calendar management, see my web calendar thread.  I really like oggsync as it keeps all my calendars synchronized no matter where I am.  As far as asset allocation goes, I don't get any fancier than LPL's portfolio review tool.  It;s been more than adequate for my needs.

Good luck with the jump...there's no question that I'm happier since I made the move.

Hey Pin;

Care to share with us what software choices you went with? I am a new RIA that really  needs to make some software choices soon…

For CRM, we have implemented Redtail (redtailtechnology.com), and it’s pretty nice.  It’s only $65/month ($50 for LPL) for up to 15 users.  It has a calendar, contact management, etc.  It’s web based, so there’s no software to install.  It seems very similar to the Jones system, but better. I’m not trying to put down Jones, as their CRM solution is actually pretty good, and I haven’t found anything better until Redtail.

I use Gorilla for CRM.  It is a piece of junk but they are aggressively trying to catch back up to current technology.  The latest realease is better, but still based on MS Access database technology.  The pride themselves on being much more than a CRM, and that is true, but they also think the business is run like the old days of brokerage business.  Secrets be told even EDJ brokers used Gorilla instead of the EDJ CRM.  If you ever wondered why EDJ spent so much time trying to make brokers enter notes, it was because so many EDJ guys used other CRM programs in case they ever left.

I often find one software may work for one may not for another.  Many give you free trials, so try them.  If you need specifics, send me a note.
