If I quit ML and go to work at a bank, but not as a broker, will ML come after me for repayment of training costs?

I would be in a corporate & investment banking development program
at the bank; does that constitute “leaving the industry?”

Or do I have to “make” them fire me?

Too bad you did not go to RJ.  You own your book.  Are you leaving before your training period is over???  Why are you going to a bank.  If you have a decent book, you might get the new firm to pay for you.

Mother has been just fine to me.  I simply have come to realize
that this is not what I want to do for a living.  I don’t have
enough of an existing network to make this work, and I didn’t get a
college degree so that I could become a telemarketer hassling people
who are trying to work.

ML is still the best in the business, no doubt.

"I didn't get a college degree so that I could become a telemarketer hassling people who are trying to work."

That attitude is probably why you are failing out of the business. If you perceive your marketing efforts as being intrusive to people who NEED your help, then it permeates your daily activities, and ultimately leads you out.
