Hey folks,

 
 
  Well as I had mentioned before, I started down the path of Indy broker (and by god, how liberating it is).
 
Some marketing/prospecting questions.
 
-I have already sent out a 1000 letter mailer, which details my services/background and I already hit up Polk for directories.  However as a compliment/alt. to my methods, Id like to add doorknocking to local businesses around the area.  Any tips that you can offer?
 
-What have you found to be good talking points given the current state of the economy (market volatility, retirement ques., etc.)
 
-What keeps you sane? 
 
I would love some feedback, as it would be greatly appreciated.

What is your background?

Do you have a base of clients already?
What firm did you hook up with?
What type of client aer you focusing on?

I found going to the back door instead of the front door works the best.  They won't ignore someone knocking on the back door.  Always start out..."I'm planning on opening an office in your neighborhood, can I see all your financial statements please"...Never tell them you real name, their just planning on calling the police after you leave.  Good luck...

Not my market, but early Saturday morning is a good time to DK industrial parks, I've been told. Owners is usually there working, fairly relaxed, gatekeepers are gone. He or she will respect you for working a Saturday. You have to be able to relate to whatever issues are important to them; taxes,most likely, insurance.

Well I came from a bank/discount background and got sick of the politics/lack of products and payout.

 
I have a few CPA's, Docs and Attorneys that I can lean on for clients (gave them all great advice especially thru the down market and they have been pretty grateful, if there is such a thing as a grateful client.)  However by and large I dont have a book.  Yes, I know the "its going to be extremely hard if not downright impossible" speech. 
 
Im hooked up with a small indy firm, we do pretty much everything (money management, insurance, benefits, etc).  I want to be the one stop shop because especially @ a discount house I got sick of losing out because we didnt offer something in particular.
 
As for my ideal client, I have had great experiences with CPAs, lawyers, doctors and small business owners.  It seems that we click well and they are willing to lend me an ear.  Plus I can relate my experiences to them and find good working rapport.  Bottom line is that I aim to help my clients and to help myself.   Which is why im here because there is a wealth of excellent information and experience from everyone on here (and honestly, its what led me to take the step that I am taking now).

Do you doorknock with a specific product?  Do you just do it "Just to let you know im in business in the area"?

Id rather get in front of these people and tell them what I am about.  Much harder for them to turn me down in person as opposed to say, over the phone. 

Some help/feedback could greatly be appreciated.

Knock on the door. Tell them who you are and why you stopped by.  Casually ask if they work with anyone LOCALLY on their retirement. Hand them a card and flyer on your firm.  If noone is home, leave SOMETHING to reference when you call them.  See if you can get  a name or number..move to the next house, business, trailer, condo, tepee....(skip homeless people)

Great tip Spears.........going to use it when I DK on businesses later this afternoon and into the weekend.  Unless I need a bottle of Thunderbird I doubt homeless people will help my endeavor.
