5 choices

Pitch a product ( eg. a muni yielding 5%),
or a service ( "time for a financial physical?),
or sniff for dissatisfaction ( Are you happy with the direction things are going?)
or general suggestion ( We have a few great ideas, Can we show you a couple right now?)

OR
It doesn’t matter? Just call and it will come?

Which works the best over time?

For the small business market I would say “Physical”… Talking to the about “what they are doing for themselves” inside of their business. That opens a number of doors. You can always pitch the product after you get your 3 no’s.

  Just call and it will come. Without making the calls the question is moot. 'Product' no doubt IF YOU MAKE THE CALLS.   If you ask enough people if you could wee-wee on their head the more you ask the more will say yes.

Running the risk of a roogle comment, at has sunk into me that it does not matter what I call or say it is just the numbers.  This has been written about here, in Million Dollar Practice and EIA by Nick Murray that leads to the plan below.  Indeed I made 2 hours of test dials for 90 calls, 8 contacts and 2 prospects.

The Plan:  200 calls a day times 250 business days in a year is 50,000 dials in a year. If one connects 1 in 6 Gets one lead for every 7 connections Closes on 1 for every 15 leads Than after 12 months AUM would be 7.9 million if one qualifies for 100k accounts.  Well maybe not that high as there is the first 3-4 months with maybe no sales and then the ball starts rolling.   My questions for all would be 1)do these numbers hold up for 100k qualifier?  ie, Mr. Jones I specialize in those clients who have over 100k of investable assets... 2)does location matter at all?  I can still sort prospects in SalesGenie right? 3)if it's so easy above is it that others don't keep calling or just lack sales skills.    To the OP, so I don't steal the thread, can you try and go for appt or dissatisfaction first and if you find a prospect that doesn't meet after a few shots than go for product?  I would grab 50 names from each of the above list and it should take an hour for each 50 dials and then compare the results after 4 hours.  Really after 50,000 there is no magic script, it is how fast I can hear the dial tone or NO 49,900 times if my above holds true.

Product. … Gets the prospect’s attention right away, conveys to him that you are a serious person who wants to get some business down. You’re not calling him to shoot the breeze, you want to sell him something.
For example, which of these approaches is better.
1. Good afternoon, sir, this is Buy&Hold of Edward Jones Pimping Service and I have a beautiful, young Chinese girl, 38D, guaranteed to light your pants on fire. If you have the money available, I recommend you get some today!
2. Good afternoon … yada, yada yada, I just wanted to see how you feel about the quality of the sex you’ve been receiving yesterday.
See the difference. Option 2 the guy is going to be confused and maybe wonder if you are trying to pick him up. Option 1 he knows exactly what you are offering.
And you know, maybe he doesn’t even like Chinese girls. So you ask him if you can call him back when the Eastern European white slavery ring sends you another shipment. Keep dripping and you will get yourself a client.
And if he hangs up, you’ll know he’s gay and you can move on.

In all seriousness this post does make a good point about calling on product and uncovering needs/wants.
