I think Morgan Freeman should have played him, however. He looks a lot more like Morgan Freeman than Will Smith.

I’m not sure but, I think he was friends with Will Smith before the
movie so that might have had something to do with it. Also, since the
boy in the movie is Will’s kid it kind of worked out well. His story is
amazing. Very very admirable. It just goes to show that almost anything
is possible.
