Leaving AGE. Quest. about Train. Agreemen

Jul 17, 2007 10:30 pm

If I have been with AGE for over 5 years and then leave can AG Edwards

come after me in any way ? Did I sign a non compete ? (I don’t think I did)

but recruiting firm is sure I did.

I know I was responsible for training costs if I left within 5 years, but I don’t

think I could be on the hook for anything as long as I stay within protocal.

Am I right ??

Jul 17, 2007 11:27 pm

After 5 yrs you are free and clear…I hope you are in my office lol

Jul 18, 2007 12:21 am

you are a loser.

Jul 18, 2007 12:53 am
you are a loser.
Wow that makes me feel bad…lol
Good luck so which firms hadcuffs are you putting on?
I just dont see the sense in jumping now, I will wait it out take my $$ an see how things shake out…most likely I will end up with lots of new clients that wont follow their FC’s to  MS or Merrill lol

Jul 18, 2007 1:33 am

great point, my clients probably won’t follow me. That is why I am moving

so you can have them.

So someone is paying you to not bring a book…interesting.
Sorry you have built such a poor book that you cant or wont take it.
BTW you never answered my question

Jul 18, 2007 1:54 am

nestegg - I agree with you, it's stupid to move now and we're going to benefit with added clients from guys that move prematurely.  That said, brokerman seems hell bent on doing this.  Have at it dude.

"Mr. & Mrs. client - Your broker is no longer here.  Wachovia offered him a nice check, but he felt it wasn't enough.  So he's going to be calling you, if he hasn't already, asking you to move to his new firm.  Just remember that his new firm offered him double to move.  How does that make you feel?"

Jul 18, 2007 2:22 am

Jul 18, 2007 2:26 am

hey let him go…I’m sure he’s at the top of his class rankings…maybe he’s going to a bank to “better serve his client base”…or sell annuities to 80 year old ladies whose CD’s come due…lol

Jul 18, 2007 11:08 am

Brokerman, you did sign a non compete but the agreement is only in effect for five years during your training period.

If any of you are in my office, you are more than welcome to the 20%aum that I will voluntarily leave behind. Good luck and have fun calling on those "prime" clients. As I switch my practice to an independent business model you can be assured that only the bottom of the barrel loser clients will follow me & I will struggle to get over the first 300 "A" households that I have had 10yr close relationships with at the old AGE...oh well life is tough when I try to explain to those clients why I walked away from a 80% retention (bribe) offer to me & my family to go somewhere else where I won't get any big front money nor will I be able to serve their best interest. All of you have a point, that's not a very compelling story.

It's 7am and I need to grab another cup of joe & get back to reviewing those completed ACAT packages, moving a book is allot work. See ya around.

Jul 18, 2007 11:37 am

Just curious how many of the FA's "hanging on" at AGE have ever been through an ACQUISITION of this magnitude and if they might have been some of the brokers who were on here bitching and whining about a simple beta conversion a couple years back?  Suspect that will seem like a cakewalk before all this transition settles.

If you were to move, when is the best time?  I don't see any 3 day weekends coming for a while.  Do it on a Friday?

Labor Day is not that far away....

Then there's Thanksgiving if you wanted to be a glutton for punishment.

Let's just say it's T-minus 4 weeks and counting or less. Mentally I'm already checked out of day to day production.  Funny thing is although there is some feelings of anxiety & fear to be honest...Right now I'm just ready to launch. It's as though I have the biggest swinging schlong on the planet because I'm feeling so confident & cocky about my ability to get the clients that I have targeted & also I feel so good about the move.  Not sure if anyone else can relate to the feeling, but it's pretty intense.

Jul 18, 2007 6:30 pm

While I feel that you are doing this prematurely, I wish you the best of luck.

Fortunately it's a fee month so my tracks were covered by fee's hitting this month. All service issues have been resolved as of yesterday & my poker face is in place.  It's a hard thing to do to guys that you've worked with for years...but at the same time, the minute I resign they will attack my client base like sharks with blood in the water, I know this for a fact because I've done the same in the past. This is a cutthroat business.

Thanks for the tips.

Check.

Already completed.

In fact, the top A client list is done with name, address, personal contact information along with account numbers, and service request information in excel spreadsheet format for my assistant who will be in place two weeks ahead of my launch date.

Good luck and keep us posted.  I’ll be behind you a month or so, waiting on the build out.   You’re making the right decision for your business.

Jul 18, 2007 10:51 pm

against protocal to take account numbers. Does anyone know of AGE suing a

departing broker for not acting in AGEs best interest while still employed

(pre soliciting clients) or taking account #'s or files.

thanks.

and by the way nest egg person if I did not think the major revenue

producing relationships in my book were coming I obviously would not

leave.

Best of luck to you. Please check in after you get settled in and let us know

how things went for you.

Spend the next couple weeks conversing with your clients... Give them an EXTRA amount of service and convey to them how appreciative you are of their business and how much you value their relationship. Call them to provide an update on the state of the markets. Send them a thank you card for their "commitment to ensuring their financial future" by working with you...

Just increase the amount of touches until Jump Date and then hit the ground running...

Jul 19, 2007 6:32 pm

Don't forget to get a flash drive and save ALL of the files and docs that you have amassed over the last 5 years.  Also save all of your email addresses, contacts, etc by exporting from outlook...

And GOOD LUCK!

This is a great idea.  With so much going on, it's easy to loose sight of what is the most important thing right now...emphasizing the relationship.  I'm doing a little of this right now, I need to be (will be) doing more.  Thanks blam.

I forgot to use a flash drive (not that much of a tekki) but the ol' copy & paste to the "D" drive disk worked beautifully.  Also syncing my PDA with Outlook is a lifesaver. Fortunately I've been using Outlook for sometimes now as a client mangement tool, can you imagine what was in there...notes, important dates, maturities, next appointments, client id's, work/home/cell phone numbers etc....

thanks to all for your good ideas!

Now that will get you a restraining order. Had it happen to one of the FA that joined us. He was forced to turn over everything he had taken, plus they impounded his home PC. Got to sit around for 45 days and wasn't allowed to call his clients. They could call him. Firm(branch) fined 60K + costs.

Probably ran his mouth to someone at the old firm (that good buddy down the hall)…

Or someone from AGE mangement checks everyone that resigns to go indy in the next few weeks.

Don't think they won't go after RR to get your IP address. And RR will throw you under the bus in a heartbeat.

I'd second the motion to be very careful.  Mgt may or may not know about this place, but I'm sure they view all the information you are talking about as company property and if they get a clue that you might have taken it (and the company techno-geek may be able to do some amazing investigative work on your old company computer), they can potentially make your life miserable...be very careful...both here and at the office...

I wish you well...I've been in your shoes and it's a nervous time...

If you think they don't know about this site, you are slightly delussional.  I'd guess that there are even some 'contributors' to this site that are in or have been in management.

You Do realize, don't you, that those quarterly fees are paid IN ADVANCE, right?  That means if you leave prior to the end of September you will lose the pro-rata share of the unearned fee for the quarter?

Only Client Choice was paid in arrears, and no one has much of anything in Client Choice since the B/D exemption rule was overturned.

Just want to make sure you incorporate that into your financial projections.

Oh, I'm confident that managment at many firms are aware of this site...probably not all members of management, but enough that I'd post assuming they may read it.  I also have no doubt that some have posted here.  In fact, a certain Guest1 was outed as a regional leader from Edward Jones back some time ago.

Interesting. Say a rep gets paid their advisory fees on August 10th (covering the July, August & Sept quarter) but then quits on August 31st. Since he/she was already paid, are you saying the firm will require the rep to pay back a portion (1/3rd of the fee paid to him/her for the month of Sept) of that check?

Does the 5 years start from my first day of employment or from when I went into production?

Jul 24, 2007 1:43 pm

The 5 years start from the day you got Registered (passed your Series 7).
