Is this a sign?

So… starting at MSSB tomorrow, wicked excited right?

Start my soccer game this morning, ten minutes into the second half... go to shoot the ball.   BAM... planted wrong, shattered my patella in my left knee.  Surgery on Tuesday, can't start work tomorrow.  I'm swollen like crazy and in a fair amount of pain, since I am just wrapped up (my knee is still in three pieces inside my leg). I left my BM a voicemail, apologized for calling him on a Sunday, but thought I still should given the situation.   Anyone have any thoughts as to whether or not they will keep me around or retract their offer?  Again, was supposed to start training tomorrow.   Thanks

All they were gonna do is stick you in a cube anyways and tell you to read for 3 months. See if you can pickup your series 7 material and study at home until you are able to come to the office.

That’s what I’m hoping for.  Have to wait to hear from the doctor today and see when surgery will be.  First couple days after I’ll be prety out of it so I can’t do much, hopefully next week though

I would go in and show your face - the knee is not life threatening. Sorry to hear about your injury.

Update

Scheduled my surgery for noon tomorrow.  Spoke with my BOM and he said he would mail the study materials over night.  However, I told him I would actually stop in tomorrow before surgery (although in street clothes), to pick up the materials in person and show my face.  He said it was not necessary, but I'll feel better knowing that I showed up.   It will be quite a journey getting through parking garages then up to the 19th floor with one leg and crutches though :)

Man up and stop being a girl.

Joking I hope?

Not asking for sympathy, but seriously man.  Have you ever tried hobbling arround with 3 separate pieces of bone floating around in your leg?

You could add that Biffy was very upset by this and it has ruined your vacation plans to the south of France....

Yes, as a matter of fact I have but in my case there were 4 pieces.  My ear drum was blow.  My hand was smashed and my sidearm empty.

...but go ahead and tell your soccer stories.

Oh jeez… here we go with another “one upper” story.

Did it ever occur to you that you don't always have to rip on someone else?  That sometimes saying "ah that sucks" is good enough?  Or maybe offering advice?    I just get the feeling that if some peoples' clients saw the way they conduct themselves on this board, some people would have far less clients.
Sep 14, 2009 9:42 pm

Don't hate! You are much too serious - going to cry the first time a prospect turns you down?

Nope, no tears here my friend.  Not too serious either…

millionairemind, glad to see it seems like someone else has been seeing what I'm seeing :)

It can’t be good to miss your first day of work.  If I were your boss I might be thinking: “If he ain’t getting paid for soccer, it’s just a game.  Kids play games.  This job is for a man (or woman).”

Just one schmuck's opinion.  Regardless, good luck.

Thats absurd.
The guy plays sports.
I ripped up my shoulder playing hoops when i was 50. I had surgery and missed 3 days of work. Maybe i should have gotten fired. That would be a real interesting U-5. "permitted to resign for being too competitive."
Gimme a break, the guys trying to do the right thing.
Sep 15, 2009 12:30 am

Thanks Sportsfreak.  That’s the way I looked at it.  During my initial interview, the BOM was impressed that I was so active with soccer and softball, liked the competitive nature and social aspect of it.

imabroker, I gotta say that is pretty harsh.  I can see your viewpoint, but as my BOM actually said to me on the phone.... "s*it happens, it's obvious you didn't plan for this.  Get it fixed up and call me after surgery so I know how it went."  At least it seems like he is being realistic, which is great for me.   Thankfully I had very strong recommendations about how hard of a worker I am, now I'm going to have to prove it!   Thanks for the comments sportsfreak.

If you aren’t licensed yet you can turn this into a positive.  As was said earlier, have them let you study at home.  At least you’ll have something to do while you are recovering.  By the time you get licensed, etc. you might be able to work at 100% again.

Sep 15, 2009 1:49 am

Should work out exactly like that.  6-8 weeks on crutches post operation.  I get around 3 months to get my licenses…

Sep 15, 2009 3:33 am

WORKINHARD,

Don't sweat it. your BOM is right, sh@@ happens. Just make sure you hit the books at home and make sure you pass the test.  You can prospect with your doctors and P.T. people.

That’s the plan.  The practice is pretty large… 20 or so orthopedic specialists plus staff :).  I’ve been going there for 11 years, know them pretty well, especially my surgeon.

And I just checked freeerisa.com... my particular surgeon (the gentleman I know well) just happens to be the plan administrator, and I don't think he is very aware that he is being WAY overcharged on compensation.    Thanks CPA

lol ... this is some funny shyt
Sep 15, 2009 1:28 pm

What is it that is so funny exactly?

Sep 15, 2009 2:19 pm

I’m 50.  I play soccer.  I’m a goalkeeper.  Do I get paid for it?  Well, it’s a very competitive sport, I’ve enjoyed playing for the last 35 years, and my son thinks it’s cool.  I’d say that’s pay enough.

And, workinhard, might I suggest you focus on the benefits of your personal service and “beside manner” when you pitch the 401(k) to your doctor.  I have quite a few docs as clients, and they don’t give a rat’s hiney about the fees.  They want service and NO headaches.

Good luck

Kens,

Thanks for the comments.  I do agree with you, and that was sort of going to be my opener to mention the plan itself, see how he is feeling about it.  Once I get a bit of a reputation built for myself, I think I have a great angle to play the retirement plan business.  In my previous posts when I first joined I mentioned by job right before I took this position was in Sales Consulting in Retirement Services for a large record keeper.    I have an understanding of what drives a price to be what it is, how cash flow and head counts affect plans, what levels of service different plans can expect, etc.  Compensation is just one of the factors.  I have tons of files with competitive information on Fidelity, ING, MassMutual, Great West, etc.   I'm hoping to leverage all of this when I speak with businesses, I think it will put me in a good spot.   And Kens, soccer is awesome, I agree.  I hope to be able to play again at some point, but well see...

I think what Volt is trying to say is you don't even have your license.

This is a funny thread.  Stick to drinking Capre Sun's and eating orange slices until you've done something.

hotair… so are you saying I should bother having a plan or thinking towards the future until I have my series 7?   God forbid I’m concerned about my job or looking for some input on how to handle a situation huh?

This just brings me back to my previous comments that if clients saw what some people post on this forum, they would probably be someone elses client.   However, I do like the orange slices reference... haven't had them in a while though.
