RIA Vs Hedge Fund Money Management

Hello,

I am sure there are variations. Generally speaking do RIA firms actively invest client assets like a hedge fund manager or do they allocate money to investment managers like general financial avisory firms? Is it up to the RIA or is there additional regulation required to directly invest.Any other differences would be appreciated. Thanks.
