MSSB Marketing/Prospecting Methods

Nov 2, 2009 3:08 pm

So from what I understand I will need to use my network, cold call, and use seminars as my prospecting/marketing methods.  One person I spoke with within MSSB told me they think cold calling and seminars are the best way.  Another told me he used his network to build his business, basically telling them his goals and asking them how they would do it.  The BM told me that I would need to do 2 hours of cold calling a day.  He offered me a ptr deal where my initial job is just to set up meetings and get clients.  So I need to master the marketing/prospecting side.  I think I’m in a good situation by having a Sr Ptr that will help me close deals and go to every meeting to help build the book.  My plan is to obviously utilize all of these methods intially…I read that someone suggested he would have used seminars in the beginning at least one a month.  So I plan on holding a seminars in the beginning, use my network by telling them my goals and asking them how they would raise 10 mill in the current year (I already have some people who will give me referrals especially because I have an experienced Ptr), and cold call everyday (probably more than 2 hours, more like 6-8 hrs) I was thinking a few hours in the morning/afternoon/evening.  I also plan on working from 7 am to 8 pm everyday, probably 6 hrs Saturday and Sunday.  Let me know if this is accurate or if these are the only ways I can market/prospect since this will be my primary job function intially.  Any feedback would be appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

you’re going to hang yourself by March if you think working that many hours is healthy.  If you actually are working while at work; and you put in 8-9 hours Mon-Fri and 5 on Sat you will be successful.

It will be tough to actually “work” that many hours for an extended period of time.  Especially if you are not hitting the numbers you expect.  Working 75 hours a week is a drag if you are striking out.

Try actually breaking down those hours and see exactly what you will be doing those hours.  Chances are, you can work fewer hours and actually accomplish your objectives.  Honestly, it's great to be enthusiastic, but you have to be realistic. I think Baldy's suggestion is pretty spot-on.

Of course the PTR and the BM want to be with you on appointments. This will help them build there book so when you leave they already have met the client and it will be a smooth transition to them.

Most senior reps and BM build there book this way.

Do you have any sort of education?   Tell me you don't really run any sort of "business" and that no one other than immediate family trusts you to run money for them.
