ESPN is a Joke

May 13, 2009 12:49 am

Is it just me or has ESPN become a joke. I tune in to see some baseball scores and in 5 minutes they talk about Manny, Clemens, and Favre. Does anyone f**king care about these pieces of crap? 2 of them are garbage cheaters and all 3 are ego maniacs. I am a fan of sports not soap opera weekly !!!!!!!!!!

May 13, 2009 2:31 am

True. I guess that is why Cramer has good ratings. Legions of meatballs will watch him and Stuart Scott spew commentary that is complete crap. I guess it shouldn’t surprise me, President Barry rode a meatball wave all the way to the White House. What a country !!!

ESPN news always has the scores…

I enjoy mike and mike in the morning on ESPN2

Ron if you don't like ESPN, don't watch it.  Where will you tune in to?  What's your alternative?  ESPN is a sports NEWS channel.  Manny, Clemons, and Favre are news stories.  Now I will agree with you that maybe they do too many of these 3 hour long shows devoted to a story and while I like the fact that they loop Sportscenter hourly every morning I also hate that.  It is what it is brother!  We don't have any other alternative and it is still the best sports channel out there.

May 13, 2009 2:06 pm

Just because it is the only option doesn’t make it right.

May 13, 2009 2:52 pm

My point was, what if we didn’t even have ESPN?  What would you watch?  Would you think it was that bad if it went away?  Would you miss it?  Maybe not, I don’t know.

May 13, 2009 3:01 pm

I agree with Ron 100%.  10 years ago Sportscenter was the best show on TV.  Now its a shell of its former self by showing highlights for 33% of the show and “breaking news” for the other 2/3’s.  Breaking news being if Brett Favre may or may not have sent x-rays of his arm to the Vikings, or that some goofball dad is demanding that the Celtics apologize to his son for inadvertently grazing him during the game over the weekend.  Thats not news, thats Perez Hilton in sports form.  I feel like I’m reading some Hollywood tabloid everytime ESPN is on.  Thats the thing though, there are no alternatives.  What was once a great sports station is now a depressing existence.

May 13, 2009 3:18 pm

Thank you 3rdyrp2 for stating my case in a much better way than I was !!!

It went from highlights and scores to Access Hollywood.

Or maybe it’s the degeneration of professional sports!

May 13, 2009 3:51 pm

That is part of it too. I am an absolute sports addict and I have to follow everything, but ESPN is beyond brutal. Just look at some of the “analysts” they trot out there. Jalen Rose ? Michael Irvin ? Desmond Howard ? Just because they were good players doesn’t mean they can accurately describe the action. Most of them can hardly speak english.

May 13, 2009 3:57 pm

I’ll agree to that, but that’s all stations and thier analysts of former players.  They all do it.  I will also agree that ESPN is a shadow of it’s former self, but it’s all there is.  It’s like when MTV stopped showing videos and now only show “scripted reality”.  Maybe a phoenix will rise out of the ashes of ESPN.  I doubt it though.

What are you looking for them to do?? The highlights can't last the entire show.. There aren't enough games on a given day.. and it's bad enough when they talk about hockey..... I think the quality of anchors has fallen off,

I think the quality of anchors has fallen off,[/quote]   They can show more highlights per game.  Most of the time they'll show just the deciding play of a game and move on to the next game.  No need to rush highlights so they can get to the next rumor of some inside sources friend having dinner with some guy who knows the neighbor of the Redskins GM and overheard someone telling the waiter that they were thinking about considering signing Anquan Boldin.  That'll attract more viewers than showing more highlights of each game?  Or instead of having the "Sunday Conversation" with some athlete, have a "Daily Conversation" so we can learn more about the guys.

They can cut out tons of BS. If you watch an entire game and then watch the ESPN highlights of the same game they don't even tell an accurate story. The clowns look at the box scores after the games have finished and show highlights of the biggest name players. Anyone who thinks ESPN doesn't COMPLETELY overplay certain storylines is nuts.

I don’t like the Sports Reporters.  NEVER HAVE!  I would bet that most, if not all, never played a competetive organized sport.

ESPN has sucked for years. Ratings are king and it's a shame but Soap opera sells.   Remember T.O. He made the main stream media for weeks before leaving Philly like a whining bitch.
May 28, 2009 3:03 am

For all of you ESPN supporters you have officially lost the argument. I switched to ESPNEWS for SPORTS scores this evening and they are showing highlights of the spelling bee. Are they doing this because it is sports related ? NO. Are they doing this because it is fun to watch? NO. Are they doing this because anyone cares? NO. They are doing it because the parent company ABC is showing the spelling bee during primetime. Unbelievable.

Everyone has to answer to the man!

Oct 27, 2009 8:56 pm

Just further proof how ridiculous the worldwide leader is… They boot Steve Phillips for sleeping with a cow , but they have no problem glorifying the comeback of Michael Vick every single day for 2 months straight because it was getting ratings. Which is it ESPN ? You can’t have moral clarity one week and not the next!

I definitely dislike many things about the booyah network, but I have to give credit where credit is due…

They have done an excellent job all week of celebrating Veterans Day. On all of their radio and TV shows they have gone to great lengths to thank our military for keeping us safe and fighting for this country. Thank you ESPN and God Bless our military.

Anyone ever read ESPN Mag?  It’s terrible.  I ordered it for about 3 months once and cancelled it.  I only read SI now.

Yeah, that thing is a rag. I have a friend who has it in the john. If he's smart, he could just skip the TP with that thing in there. Terrible read, almost as bad as the website where you have to pay to read some of their lame commentary by overhyped sports writers.

Its just like Maxim.  Very flashy, lots of ads, very little substance.
